He is a native of Kansas City, Missouri and resided in St. Simons, Island with his wife Dale Vaughn Rivenbark Moffett for 12 years. He was an active member of the St. Simons Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon.
He was survived by his wife Dale Vaughn Rivenbark Moffett of St. Simons Island, Georgia, his daughter Elizabeth Moffett Clark and her husband Jim, Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, son Harry M. Moffett, IV and his wife Deirdre of New Orleans, mother Margaret Neel Yarbrough Moffett of Dallas, sisters Peggy Moffett Zbinden, Dallas, and Ann Moffett Tully, St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his father Harry M. Moffett, Jr. and first wife Margaret Louise Stone Moffett (“Peggy”). He has several grandchildren: Tommy and Taylor Clark, Jimmy and Kathryn Shoemaker, and Claire and Colin Moffett and several nieces and nephews.
He went to high school at Ashley High School in Gastonia, North Carolina and college at Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College). He was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune and then later at 8th and I in Washington, D.C. where he was a member of the Color Guard and served as Rifleman in the funeral procession for President John F. Kennedy among many other esteemed assignments. Awards in the Marine Corps include Commendations for Rifle Expert, Pistol Marksman, Certificate of Achievement Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. After the military, he was a career banker for 45 years, where he served as President of several banks and retired at Capital One Bank in Monroe, Louisiana. In retirement, he enjoyed annual Honor Guard assignments escorting World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. He also enjoyed giving tours of the St. Simons’ Lighthouse. Hobbies included reading, fishing and playing Keno.
In lieu of gifts, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, St. Simons Island Salvation Army, and Glynn County Humane Shelter. The family will hold a private memorial at St. Simons Presbyterian Church. Hal will be buried in Bristol, Tennessee.
