Gordon Pierce Poppell

Gordon Pierce Poppell, 97 of Brunswick departed his life Saturday, September 2, 2023, at his son’s residence on St. Simons Island. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. www.edomillerandsons.com. Graveside Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 2023, in Palmetto Cemetery with Morrey Deen officiating.

Born June 23, 1926, in Odum, Georgia to the late Riley and Mae W. Poppell, he was a US Army Veteran serving in WWII. Mr. Poppell had been a resident of Brunswick for most of his life. He was Chief Master Sgt. 224 Combat Communications with the Air National Guard. He was awarded the Airforce Commendation Medal and the Georiga National Guard Service Medal for outstanding service as a professional leader, Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, and Squadraned First Sergent. His service to his country began in October 1944 and included service in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. During his career, he was awarded many badges. Notably, the Combat Infantry Badge, Army Occupation Medal, and WWII Victory Medal.

He enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Mr. Poppell was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brunswick. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Patsy S. Poppell, and five siblings, Olen Poppell, Joe Poppell, Ethel Crosby, Willie Crosby, and Frances Tedeschi.

Survivors include three children, Diane Person of Brunswick, Richard Poppell of St. Simons Island, and Patricia (Trish) Adams and husband Richard Adams of St. Simons Island, two grandchildren, Lynn Cousins and Mike Ammons (Lisa), three great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Carolyn Hatala of St. Simons Island.
