George C. Holland, Sr., 74, of St. Simons Island, died Monday, March 3, 2014 at Hospice of The Golden Isles. Funeral services will be held 11AM Friday, March 7, 2014 at St. Simons United Methodist Church with Rev. Marcia Cochran and Rev. Josh Bizzell officiating. Interment will follow in Christ Church Cemetery with George Holland, Jr, George Wommack, Ryan Wommack, Michael Wommack, Charlie Bankston, and Bryan Anderson serving as pallbearers.
Born May 19, 1939 in Glynn County to the late Albert M. and Anna M. Holland, he was a Graduate of Glynn Academy Class of 1957 and attended Brunswick Junior College. A lifelong resident of Glynn County, Mr. Holland served in the USMC during The Bay of Pigs conflict, and after serving his country he began his career at Brunswick Pulp & Paper where he became a supervisor of the electrical department, retiring in 2000. Mr. Holland was a member of St. Simons United Methodist Church, where he was an active participant of The Methodist Men’s Life Group. He was also a past member of Brunswick Country Club. A fisherman extraordinaire, he enjoyed fishing the local waters his whole life. He also enjoyed golfing and was an avid reader. His Irish heritage made him naturally the life of the party. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Albert M. Holland. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lurlyne Holland of Brunswick, Ga a son, George C. Holland Jr. and wife Laura of Kennesaw, Ga a daughter, Ashley Holland Anderson and husband Bryan of Fleming Island, Fl and a sister, Mary Lou Hagey of Brunswick. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6PM until 8PM at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
