Genie Reeves McGarvey blessed others with her positive outlook on life for 78 years. She was born on 25 March 1946, and passed away Saturday, 29 June 2024, with her son Kevin and loved ones by her side. She was predeceased by Kevin’s twin brother, Murray Patrick McGarvey, her sisters Martha Kieffer and Mary Sudlow, and her parents Roy Randall Reeves and Ruth Alice Burson Reeves. She is survived by her brother George (Helga) Reeves of Thomson, Georgia, son Kevin (Kathryn) McGarvey of St. Simons Island, grandchildren Griffin and Adalena McGarvey (The Little People), Parker (Sparky), Lillian, Madisen, and Grace; great grandchildren Liam, Chase, & Lylah; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, and former husband Cormac Murray McGarvey, Jr. of St. Simons Island. Her McGarvey sisters-in-law and family always remained precious to Genie. The family especially thanks Genie’s caregiver Cresha for her support and love.
A resident of the Golden Isles for more than 50 years - Genie Ruth Reeves was born and reared on her family’s farm in Thomson, Georgia. She attended the Women’s College of Georgia in Milledgeville.
Mother, friend, hardworking entrepreneur and so much more. Genie was a lifelong gardener, reader, and big Georgia Bulldawg fan. Her dignified (although perennially lighthearted) selfless approach to life and its ceaseless challenges served as an example for many. She was many things to many people and will be sorely missed by friends and family.
Visitation will be 9:00 am Saturday 6 July at Curtis Funeral Home in Thomson, Georgia. Graveside service will follow at Sweetwater Baptist Church Cemetery at 10 am. A memorial service at Saint Simons Island will be planned for a later date in July.
Pallbearers are nephews: Mahlon Kieffer, Randy Reeves, Bill Sudlow, and Michael Reeves, great nephew James Michael Reeves, and nephews-in-law Moye Walker, Freeman Milligan, and Malek Rais.
Despite her love of flowers, Genie requested that memorials instead be made to The Murray P. McGarvey ’94 Scholarship Fund, The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409-6230. Genie established this scholarship in 2009 in memory of her son, Murray P. McGarvey, Citadel Class of 1994. The purpose of this endowment is to provide funds to support incoming or current cadets with demonstrated financial need with preference for those in Kilo Company.
