Charles Lee McCollum Jr., 91, of Brunswick, Georgia passed away peacefully on Friday, September 3, 2021 at home under the loving care of his granddaughter, Jennifer McCollum Yuen and her family (Mike and Sean).
Mr. McCollum was born June 7, 1930 in Odum, GA, the eldest of five sons of the late Charles Lee McCollum Sr. and the late Mary Trull McCollum. Charles was married to the late Maria Gobel McCollum (nearly 50 years) and the late Carolyn Kennedy White McCollum (nearly 20 years). Married in Germany, Maria and Charles had two sons, the late John McCollum and the late C. Hans McCollum.
Charles retired from a lifelong career at Georgia Pacific. He was a passionate service member of the US Army from April 23, 1946 - December 13, 1952. He then served in both the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. He retired from the Georgia Air National Guard CMBTS #224th on October 18, 1985.
Charles was a Mason of The Grand Lodge of Georgia - Brunswick #214 Ocean Lodge. He was a member of VFW #4092 - Saint Simons Island, Georgia. In retirement, he volunteered as a Red Coat at Southeast Georgia Health System. Charles worshipped at First United Methodist Church of Brunswick.
Charles never met a stranger. His friendly interest in others enriched his relationships, travels, and family. Upon his marriage to Maria, he became an honorary villager of Gross-Zimmern, Germany leaving behind a beloved legacy.
Charles is preceded in death by his brothers Cecil and Cary McCollum. Charles is survived by his daughter-in-law, Jody Blanton McCollum. Charles was blessed to have five grandchildren, the late Brian McCollum and wife Holly, Jennifer McCollum Yuen (Mike), Karl McCollum, Cecilia McCollum Eisentraeger (Tobias), Lydia McCollum Thornton (Jon-Patrick) and six great grandchildren, Hannah McCollum, Natalie McCollum, Bailey Mitchell (Trey), Sean Yuen, Lore Eisentraeger, McKaye Thornton and one great great grandchild Avery Mitchell. He is survived also by brothers, Clifford (Jan) and Joe McCollum and sisters-in-law Margie James McCollum, Linda Cannon McCollum, former daughter–in- law Marie O’Brien Brewer, two step children, Joe White (Megan), Judy Harper (Tim), four bonus grandchildren and 4 bonus great grandchildren.
An outdoor service will be held at 11am on Saturday, October 9th at Brunswick Memorial Park. Entombment will follow the service.
In lieu of customary remembrances contributions may be made in Charles's honor to First United Methodist Church of Brunswick.
