Billie Elizabeth Huggins, 84, of St. Simons Island, departed this life Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Hospice of the Golden Isles. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Christ Church Frederica with Mother Becky Rowell officiating.
Born August 27, 1938, in Fort Pierce, Florida to the late John Daniel McWilliams and Theresa Elizabeth B. McWilliams, she lived most of her youth and retirement on St. Simons Island.
While working for Univac Corp in California, she met a young LTJG Naval Aviator named Bobby Huggins. On November 2, 1963, Bobby and Billie were married at Christ Episcopal Church in Coronado, CA.
Bob and Billie lived in Hollywood, FL, where they raised their two sons, for twenty-five years. In 1994, they moved to Salt Lake City, UT, where they spent the next 11 years skiing into retirement.
Billie volunteered for many organizations such as the 2002 Winter Olympics, the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Historical Society of Coastal Georgia, Children’s Home Society, and the Golden Isles Symphony Society Auxiliary, where she was a charter member. She was a docent and contributor at the World War II Home Front Museum on St. Simons Island. Mrs. Huggins was also a lifelong member of Christ Church Frederica and a friend to almost everyone on St. Simons Island.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Wayne Huggins. Survivors include two sons, Michael Huggins and wife Maria of Canton, GA, and John Huggins of Lakeland, FL; two grandchildren, Matthew Huggins and Amilia Huggins; a sister, Mary Ellen McWilliams and husband David Stevens of Orange, VA; and a stepsister, Dorine Brown and husband Lindsay Brown of Charlottesville, VA.
