Policarpia "Polly" Lozano passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2024. She was surrounded and supported by her loving family and caregivers during the last days of her life.
Policarpia, known to many as "Polly" was a lifetime resident of Brownsville, Texas and was born on July 28, 1935 to Heriberto Hinojosa† and Julia Rios†. Polly was the eldest of eight siblings. She married Anselmo Lozano† on June 10, 1956 and together raised 5 daughters and 1 son.
At the age of 16 Polly went to live with her aunt who raised her. To help support her family at home she worked for two shrimp packing companies during the early 1950's.
In 1956 at a dance Polly met and fell in love with her future to be husband Anselmo "Chemo" Lozano. Soon after they married. Polly and Anselmo were great dancers. They enjoyed listening to various types of oldies Mexican music in their backyard patio in the late evenings sharing time together. Their loving relationship lasted 46 years until his passing away on September 19, 2002.
Policarpia was a working mother throughout her younger years while raising a family. She worked during the 1960's at McNair clothing company which later became Levi's Strauss. Polly worked at Levi's until 1974 and right after she became a full time housewife. She was a skilled seamstress and sewed many of her daughters clothes. She was creative and enjoyed quilt making and crocheting yarn into clothes, sweaters, blankets and many other projects.
Polly was a spiritual woman of strong faith and a devoted Catholic who prayed for her family and everyone. She was an active member and pioneer parishioner of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She volunteered with the church fundraisers through her involvement in the (kermeses) selling tickets, cooking, and manning the booths. She helped with the St. Vincent de Paul ladies group distributing clothing and food to those in need. Polly was in the Women's Altar Society. She helped with the church bingos by cooking foods, serving snacks and drinks.
Polly also enjoyed nature and the outdoors. Her all-time favorite activity was planting and tending to her garden. She had a collection and variety of flowering plants, cacti, succulents, fruit trees, and citrus trees. She enjoyed buying plants. She shared cuttings of her plants with family, neighbors and friends. She had the 'green thumb' and everything she planted was sure to grow beautiful. Gardening was her passion.
Polly's cooking skills were unsurpassed by any other. With a large family there was always something cooking in the kitchen. The special dish that she prepared was carne guisada with gravy. Her happiest moments were when family and friends gathered together at the kitchen table for food and sharing time.
Polly was a loving and dedicated mother who is survived by her children Angela Flores (Greg), Anselmo Lozano Jr. (Sandra), Rosa Maria Mayorga (David), Herlinda Pena (Rey†), Carolina Garcia (Raul) and Elena Lozano.
Left to cherish her memories are 12 grandchildren...Linette Liendo, Elva Lisa Liendo, Jake Erick Liendo, John Elvis Liendo†, Angela Deyo, Michelle Vargas, Alex Mayorga, Danica Peña, Rey Peña Jr.†, Nicholas Garcia, Caroline Rose Garcia, Jazmin Gonzalez, and 3 great-grandchildren...Oliver James Garcia, Valentine Mayorga, and Ender Mayorga
