Nobody else held me so tight
Or made me feel so right
No one's eyes shined so bright with love¬¬
As my mom, who is now high above.

The world lost a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend, on January 28, 2023. Melisa battled an aggressive cancer, but it never stopped her from giving out the best hugs. Melisa was born in Salinas, California on December 1, 1967 and lived in Brownsville, TX for 53 years.
Melisa worked as a bank teller at VFCU and data entry clerk at her alma mater, Hanna High School. Her family, friends and colleagues knew her as a kind soul, always willing to help anyway and every way.
Melisa is survived by her devoted husband of 36 years, Jose M. Herrera II, her loving mother, Estela M. Torres, caring children, Angela M. Olivares (Salvador), Jose M. Herrera Jr. (Jennifer), grand-daughter Annafaith M. Olivares and siblings, Veronica Cruz (Jose Luis), Alma M. Salazar (Juan G.) and Mario R. Torres (Claudia) and her loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Mario G. Torres.
Melisa will be remembered as a giving soul and shining light that illuminated, inspired, and guided her family and those near in her life. Her nurturing disposition and love filled many lives with comfort and joy. Melisa was humble and did not like extravagant things but rather for everyone around her to “be good.” Everyone could depend on her. You still can. All of these qualities have been passed on to her children and grandchild, so her moral insight and strength of character will live on for a very long time. Melisa loved a clean, organized home and loved dancing with her grand daughter and husband. In the rare chance she would sit down, she liked watching family game shows and talking on the phone with her family and loved ones. Melisa also loved preparing home cooked meals, solely because she could have her food “piping hot” just like she liked it!
Her proudest achievement was her role as a wife to Joe, mother to Angela and Baby Joe and beyond wonderful grandmother to Annafaith “Mi Chiquita.”
There are no goodbyes for us. You will always be in our hearts. In the words of Melisa, "Un Dia A La Vez, One Day at a Time."
Serving as pallbearers are Jose M. Herrera II, Jose M. Herrera Jr., Salvador Olivares Jr., Mario R. Torres, Juan G. Salazar and Jose Luis Cruz.
A visitation for Melisa will be held Thursday, February 2, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM with a chapel service at 2:00 PM in Chapel of Angels at Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista, 125 Mcdavitt Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78521. Followed by a burial at Buena Vista Burial Park, 5 Mcdavitt Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78521.
