Charles Stephen Paine was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 16, 1933 to Dr. Samuel Hugh and Margaret Weaver Paine. He entered the gates of heaven under Heart-to-Heart Hospice Home care in Fishers, Indiana on Monday, July 29, 2024.
Chuck’s parents instilled a strong work ethic in him. He completed high school early at Oak Park River Forest High School and a BS in Pre-med Chemistry in 1954 from Houghton College, NY. There he met his wife, Grace McKinney and they were married in Akron, Ohio, September 10, 1955. The year prior to their marriage Chuck was admitted to the University of Illinois Medical School while Grace attended missionary training in Canada.
Chuck (Doc Paine), with Grace, faithfully served the Lord in Rajnandgaon, India under Wesleyan World Medical Missions from 1959 to 1965. From 1965 to 1979, Chuck worked at the Woodlawn Hospital where he started out as the Director of Laboratories and after 4 years became the Administrator of the hospital. He and Grace, raised their family to love the Lord as they ministered in their church and community in the Chicago, IL area. Following this time, they spent nine years serving the people of Kamakwie, Sierra Leone, West Africa, furloughing and ministering in Marion, IN, and Berrien Springs, MI. From 1996 to 1998 and again in 2001 they served in Zimba, Zambia, returning to India for the two years in between. Chuck and Grace “retired” to Brooksville in 2001. They spent the 2004-2005 school year at Oklahoma Wesleyan University where Chuck taught biology and then returned to Florida where Chuck served as WBCA president for the Brooksville Wesleyan Village from 2006-2012; finally retiring... again, to care for Grace.
A true believer in children being a blessing from the Lord, Chuck will be lovingly remembered by his 8 children: Beth (Howard) Spear, Becky (Darrell) Keith, Debbie (Rick) Fletcher, Steve (Tammy) Paine, Rachel Rathbun, Joy (Benny) McJunkin, Esther (Eddy) Shigley, and Philip (Mary) Paine; his 44 grandchildren: Cindy, JP, Liz, Stephen, Rick, Rose, Tabitha, Grace, Jessica, Anthony, Chad, TJ, Lydia, Kristin, Thomas, Martin, Robert, Nate, Justin, Andrew, Hannah, Kateri, Carissa, Trey, Abby, Nicole, Jordan, Brielle, Philip, Luke, Danielle, Josiah, Noah, Alyssa, Caleb, Danny, James, Moriah, Jeremiah, Shalyn, Michael, John, Micah, and Anna; his 66 (and counting) great-grandchildren; and his sister Anne Paine Root.
