Giuseppe Lanni, also affectionally known as Peppino, Peppe and Joe was born in 1924 in the same small Italian village as our Mom, who we just lost just short a few short weeks ago. In 1940, and just 16, he was drafted into Mussolini’s Air Force where he quickly witnessed war, destruction, sorrow, and death. After Italy’s surrender in 1943, Dad continued his service for the Allied Forces under the command of U.S. GIs in Northern Italy. After the war, Dad reunited with his childhood sweetheart, our mother Giuseppina. They married in 1950 in Pompeii, Italy but spent their first three years as husband and wife apart. As our Mom returned to Brooklyn, Dad thought it be best to take a temporary but higher-paying job in Venezuela so to build some savings so that they could start a family someday. When they finally reunited here in Brooklyn they soon began to build what would become an amazing life together… and ultimately our beautiful family. Dad taught us many life lessons, most by example. He taught us Grit… through the many hours and hard work he put in at his job… Respect, by always keeping his commitments… Tenacity, for never cutting corners and always performing a task the right way, no matter how long it took. And most importantly, love and devotion, throughout his 69 years of marriage to our dear Mother.
