Born and raised in her beloved Brooklyn, N.Y., she recently moved to Connecticut to reside near her son as her health declined. Eleanor was married for 57 years to the late John Davenport, Sr., and together they forged a bond that was the envy of all who knew them. Eleanor was most notably a homemaker as she raised her family, venturing out into the workforce once the children began school. She was employed by the New York City Police Department as a school crossing guard for many years and enjoyed a brief career in the banking industry until her retirement. Besides her late husband, Eleanor was predeceased by her infant daughters, Michelle, Regina, and Eleanor; as well as her sisters, Catherine Errigo, Regina Bowen, Gertrude Pike, Mildred Gilmartin Helen Fleming; and brothers, Lester, Henry, Florence, Lawrence, and David.
She is survived by her sister, Bernadette Griffin. She was the loving mother of John Jr. (Roxanne), Kathleen (Dan) Culver, and Sharon Caroff. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Steven (Marissa) Culver, Kerin (Brian) Beedenbender, Sean (Brittany) Culver, Kimberly (Joseph) Castro, William (Lauren) Davenport, and Christine Davenport (Jeffrey Spring); and five great-grandchildren, Liliana and Chase Culver, Sarah and Tyler Castro, and Fiona Beedenbender.
The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at the Village at Kensington Place for their remarkably patient and understanding care towards Eleanor and her family during her residency.
Visitation hours will be Tuesday,(TODAY), at M.J. Smith Sons Funeral Home, 255 9th St., Brooklyn, N.Y. Mass of Christian burial to be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Holy Name of Jesus RC Church, interment to follow at The Green-Wood Cemetery.
