Samuel Rubinovitz of Lincoln, MA, died peacefully at home, on July 10, 2021 at the age of 91. Born in Dorchester, MA to Pauline and Benjamin Rubinovitz, Sam was the youngest of six siblings. A first-generation American, he made the most of his intellectual gifts and people skills to become the second in command of a Fortune 500 company.
Sam attended public grammar school, Boston English High School, and MIT, graduating with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics. He enlisted in the Air Force, experienced success there in business, and joined the growing semiconductor industry in Boston. He spent 30 years at EG&G, beginning in sales and culminating as Executive Vice President. He also served on the boards of EG&G, Kronos, KLA, and other technology companies.
Sam was steadfastly devoted to his family and friends. He had a special closeness with his older sister Esther and formed lifelong friendships with the “Dorchester boys” from his original neighborhood in Boston. In 1954, he married Phyllis Silverstein; their marriage of 67 years formed the bedrock of his life. He adored his sons, David and Robert, and took special pride in David’s work for EG&G and Kronos and Robert’s Ph.D. in Economics from MIT and career as an economist. He is fondly remembered by three generations of extended family as the patient host at antic-filled Passover Seders and the toastmaster at the special brunch concluding annual family reunions.
Sam was also known for his generosity. He and Phyllis filled their two primary homes in Lexington, MA and Longboat Key, FL with art glass, which they donated to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. They were also generous donors to MIT and Temple Emunah of Lexington, reflecting Sam’s deep commitments to education and Judaism.
Sam was much loved and will be sorely missed by Phyllis; her sister Barbara Silverstein; David; Robert and his wife Anne; grandsons, Charlie and Michael; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held at Temple Emunah, 9 Piper Road, Lexington on Tuesday, July 13 at 11:00am. Interment in Westview Cemetery, Lexington. Memorial observance at the Community Room of The Commons in Lincoln on Tuesday, 7-9:00pm, continuing Wednesday and Thursday, 2-4:00pm & 7-9:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Temple Emunah or the Alzheimer’s Association.
