Lynne Goodstein, PhD, age 70, of Cambridge formerly of State College, PA on Monday, November 5, 2018. Beloved and cherished wife of Peter Langer. Loving mother of Zachary Shotland, Aaron Shotland & his wife Susan, and adored Bubbe of Grace and Daniel Shotland. Cherished sister of Richard Goodstein, and stepmother of Samuel Langer. Loved sister-in-law of Judith Goodstein, aunt of Joshua and Lindsay Goodstein, and great-aunt of Levi and Noah Goodstein. Predeceased by her parents, Milton and Elaine Goodstein. Treasured by many Goodstein and Ettenger cousins, and by countless friends whose lives she has enriched with her kindness and love.
Lynne was born in Havertown, Pennsylvania, graduated from Haverford High School, earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and completed her PhD in Social Psychology from the City University of New York Graduate School. During her long career in academia, Lynne was a Professor of Sociology, Psychology and Women's Studies at Juniata College, Simmons College, Penn State University and the University of Connecticut and also served as the Director of the Women Studies program and Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Penn State, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professional Studies at Simmons College, and Director of the Honors Program at the University of Connecticut.
Lynne had a zest for life that brightened the days of those around her, making and maintaining friendships throughout the country. She loved traveling abroad, particularly hiking in the Swiss Alps with Peter. She also enjoyed traveling domestically, camping in the summer near the National Seashore in Wellfleet, MA, and spending time with family at the beach in Avalon, NJ. Lynne was an excellent cook, and enjoyed preparing delicious meals for family and friends who frequently requested her succulent brisket, homemade macaroni and cheese, and scratch baked apple pie. In her spare time, Lynne was a yoga enthusiast, avid hiker, play group reader, and opera buff. She was an exceptionally caring and devoted mother, and cherished the time she spent with her two grandchildren.
Lynne leaves behind a multitude of friends, family, former colleagues and students, who while devastated by her sudden passing, are immensely grateful for having known her.
Services in the Story Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge on Friday, November 9 at 10:00am. Burial to follow at Mount Auburn.
Memorial observance will be at Peter and Lynne’s residence on Saturday evening from 5:00-8:00pm and on Sunday from 1-5:00pm and 7-9:00pm. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Lynne’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
