Louise Levingston

Louise Levingston of Newton, formerly of Malden on Monday, June 24, 2013. Daughter of the late Samuel H. and Carrie Y. (Yarrin) Levingston. Born in Malden on June 28, 1924 she attended Malden schools, graduating from Malden High School in 1942. She graduated from Lowell State teachers College in 1946 with a B.S. in Ed., majoring in school music and from State College at Fitchburg in 1953 with a degree of Ed.M. Her music teaching career included all phases – band, orchestra, chorus and supervisory and directorships. She retired from Framingham schools in 1985 and continued doing general substituting in Newton and Watertown until 2004. During World War II she was with a U.S.O. group that entertained at military hospitals, camps, Stage Door Canteen in Boston and other military facilities. She was an accomplished trumpet player, a section leader of the Malden American Legion post 69 Youth band that performed at the Goodrich Arena at the New York World’s Fair 1939-40 and was a member of the former Boston Women’s Symphony directed by the late Alexander Thiede. More recently she was a member of the Harvard University Summer Band and since 1985 a member of the Lexington Bicentennial Band. In 1982 the City of Newton named a cove at Crystal Lake in her honor for services she rendered the city at the lake for many years. Predeceased by her siblings Esther Levingston Goldman and her husband Jacob, Anne G. Levingston, MD and Martha Livingston. Also her niece and nephew Selma H. Goldman and Robert M. Goldman. There are no immediate survivors. Services will be held at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., Brookline on Friday, June 28 at 10AM. Burial will follow in the Anshe Lebovitz Cemetery, C Street Roadway off of Washington St. Woburn. Remembrances may be made to Temple Ohabei Shalom, 1187 Beacon St., Brookline, MA 02446.
