I was his student at Mineola, New York, class of '62. He was the best history teacher and his passion was felt.   He asked me many times to lecture on the Spanish Civil War and on my experiences in Spain, where I was born, and encouraged me to continue my support of democratic governments. I can even remember the day that Nixon, candidate, came to Mineola  and I skipped his class.  When he learned that I had gone to listen to Richard Nixon, Mr. Parmet he had nothing but praise for my decision. My classmates informed me that he said I would make a great American citizen. We stayed in contact for many years. 

In 1973,  I was working in the Great Neck Public Schools. He came to support my efforts on behalf of the United Farm Workers Union. We stayed in touch thru the years and in 2015, he made the effort to come and meet again at Logan Airport in Boston, where we chatted about old times.  He autograph his book on IKE, which I read and passed on to my son.  Sometime later my emails to him went unanswered and I finally l learned  he had passed on. That day was a very sad day and I still miss his communication.  He had a great influence in my life, demonstrated by my first college degree is a B.A. in Political Science.

Dear Family,
A fellow Mineola High School alum sent me a link to the PBS special on George HW Bush, because he knew I would be interested in seeing Herbert Parmet's comments. Sadly, that  led me to find that Mr. Parmet had died. 

You don't know me. But "Mr. Parmet" was my reading teacher in 5th and 6th grade. Even at that young age, our required reading was the NY Times, Week in Review.  Mr. Parmet was also my social studies teacher in 11th and 12th grade, which was 1962.  Our project in 12th grade was to do a research project on a current issue.  My topic was, "Jim Crow."  I still have the books that I used to write my paper. Due in large part to Mr. Parmet, I have always been interested in politics, even though that was not my career. 
One day, many years ago,  browsing in our local book store,  I was so pleased and surprised to see his name on a book in our bookstore.  Of course, I bought it, and I wrote a letter to him with a picture of me from our local paper's editorial page when I was advocating for public quality day care centers, thanking him for his encouragement to participate. I knew he could not remember who I was, after all those years, but he graciously said that he did. I still have that letter from 40 years ago.  And finally, I'd like you to know, that in retirement, I am very active with the League of Women Voters in Connecticut, for which, I directly owe to my inspirational  teacher, Mr. Parmet.

I am happy that your father, brother, grandfather, friend seemed to have a rewarding and productive life. I am also eternally grateful for being fortunate enough to have been his student.

Always appreciated Herb's advice and support. He was a great friend and contributor to Hillsdale's history.

  We are so sorry for your lost.The short time we knew Herb we enjoyed his company he was such a gentleman. Bud says whenever Herb spoke  he spoke with a lot of knowledge about his subject.  Bud still has the Kennedy biography that Herb gave and signed to him. He thinks a lot of that gift. Bud remembers those Democratic meetings in private homes to pick candidates for Hillsdale's town offices one of which was you Joan!

My condolences to the Parmet family. Herb leaves many friends in Columbia County, which is where I enjoyed meeting him, in the 1990s.

The short time I got to know Mr. Parmet was invaluable. Thanks to his beloved grandson Dan, I was able to spend some time with him and his wife Joan. I will always remember his sweet demeanor and I'm a better person having known him.
