David Ira Lieberman

We are sad to announce the death of David I. Lieberman, who passed away on February 13th, 2024 at the age of 82.

David was born on August 8th, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey, to Milton and Jeannette Lieberman. He graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and then went on to receive a Doctorate in Applied Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Directly out of school, he was selected to be a Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey working in the field of Algebraic Geometry. David then spent the first part of his career as a college professor at Brandeis University and was awarded a Sloan Foundation Fellowship for his research in 1972. Later in his academic career, David had the chance to teach in Argentina and France bringing his loving wife, Marcia and their young family along for many memorable adventures. In 1977, he made the decision to leave academic life to pursue a career at the Institute for Defense Analysis/Center for Communications Research where he ultimately served as Director for many years. David’s work, for which he received a National Security Agency Medal for exceptional service, focused on researching the mathematical aspects of the theory of communications, including stochastic modelling, signals processing, and automatic speech recognition techniques.

David, who was predeceased by Marcia after a 58-year marriage, leaves behind his two children, Lisa (Debashis) and Ben (Carolyn), four grandchildren, Allie Korbey (Ben), Maddie Korbey, Noah Lieberman and Bram Lieberman, one sister, Frankie Lieberman, two sisters-in-law Ruth Freedman (Don) and Diane Weinstein (Michael), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and two grand-dogs (Oscar and Paris).

David’s zest for life and learning extended to his love of travel and food (especially spicy or unique), the opera, classical music, cross-country skiing, squash, golf, playing the piano, guitar and banjo. He delighted in the relationships he had with his grandchildren – never missing an opportunity to talk deeply about what was happening in their lives, telling silly jokes or seeing them in a performance, sporting event or milestone ceremony, no matter how small.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Friday, February 16th at Stanetsky Memorial Chapels in Canton, MA (livestream link: http://tinyurl.com/David-I-Lieberman), followed by a 1 PM burial at the Norwich Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery, in Preston, Connecticut.

Shiva will be observed on Saturday, February 17th from 6-8:30 PM in the chapel at Newbridge on the Charles, 5000 Great Meadow Road, Dedham, MA, and via Zoom (David Lieberman Shiva) on Sunday, February 18th at 7PM.
