Tzipi, I miss you more than you can so much! Thank you for being my BFF for 46 years - we should have had so much more time. I think about you so often and wish we could chat about so many things. Rest in Peace my special friend. Love you always.

Yesterday marked on year since my BFF was taken from us. I love and miss her so much - there has not been a day I have not thought about her. I miss laughing and reminiscing about our 46 years of friendship. Cheryl (Tzipi), you are always in my heart and never are forgotten. 

I have been thinking about our beautiful friend Cheryl at the time of the first yahrzeit of her untimely passing,  still very hard to believe.  Sending warm feelings of condolence to Esther and Diane and other family members and close friends.  

Cheryl was the first person I got to know when we both started at CJP. One of the most beautiful people inside and out that I encountered in my career. Miss her still.

Dear Esther- I am just learning of the passing of dear Cheryl. Besides all that Leann wrote about the treasured memories we shared with you at Montefiore Day School later named MVHA in Lowell, including all you did for my son, Jeremy, to discover and help him maximum his learning potential throughout his years there from kindergarten through grade 6, which I will never ever forgot, I also enjoyed every occasion that my paths crossed with Cheryl during my 20+ years as a Jewish Educator in the Merrimack Valley and the Greater Boston community. Furthermore, I remember distinctly times in subsequent years that my husband, David, and I happened to run into you, Harold, and Cheryl in places like Newport, R.I. and other beach and tourist areas. There is no doubt that Cheryl was so devoted to you and Harold, her parents, and to her sister, your daughter, Diane. Her love for family and the time and love she found to share with you in addition to the incredible contribution she made to CJP and the Jewish community here and in Israel were amazing - she seemed tireless in her energy and passion and positive spirit. I watched the video of Cheryl's funeral, as I only learned of it on Facebook tonight when I happened upon Solomont family Facebook pages. I think of you so often as you meant so much to me when you were general studies director at MVHA - my children, Jeremy, Marni, & Josh were so blessed to have had you as such a strong force in their lives and in the school. Obviously, Cheryl came by her work in the Jewish community naturally based on my fond and beautiful memories of your incredible impact on the lives of so many. Cheryl was the definition of a mensch. I never heard her say anything negative about anyone. She was there for me and for Northeastern Hillel, whenever we needed her. From someone to brainstorm with, to someone to go out to bat for us. When I needed some words of inspiration or motivation, she was there for us.  But what struck me was that no matter how busy she was, she could always carve out time in her schedule to talk and to try to help. 

Despite overseeing a program spanning the country, she knew many of my staff by name, and even stayed in touch with student leaders who had graduated years ago! I was consistently and constantly impressed by her. There are thousands of alumni at Northeastern alone, and tens of thousands across the country, whose college experience and identity was positively and substantially impacted thanks to Cheryl, and they have no idea (and thousands more who will continue to be impacted by the programs that she created). 

Cheryl was an important role model for so many of those she mentored--including me. I first met Cheryl in 2012 and didn't know then that knowing her would so dramatically impact me both personally and professionally. I am a better person for her mentorship and friendship. She personally embodied the Jewish values that she dedicated her life to sharing with others. IACT stands for: Inspired, Active, Committed, and Transformed. These same words can be used to describe how one would leave after hearing her speak from the podium...or just hanging up the phone with her.  One of the things I most admired about Cheryl was her leadership in tactfully, skillfully, but insistently raising uncomfortable truths and concerns--including at tables where the opinions she shared weren't welcome. (i.e. She was educating students and campuses about antisemitism while many Jewish academics and administrators were pushing back about even using the word...preferring words like "vandalism" when multiple swastikas surfaced on campus.) While she was clearly a creative genius, her emotional intelligence, personal investment/deep caring, and drive to do the right thing for the right reasons were probably the gifts that contributed most to the outcomes I admired most. At our annual brunch, I loved discovering things I hadn't previously known. Like that she loved the ocean, referred to her beloved mother as her "rock," crediting her parents as her own inspiration for her career in Jewish education, and that she personally sponsored/supported an individual Israeli soldier through service, in addition to her many other tzedakah contributions. I miss her every day, and am eager to hear others' stories and experiences of this true tzadika.

On the day Cheryl was buried, it was trash day in Brookline and I had a dentist appointment. These two mundane occurrences always remind me of two stories that I remember from Cheryl. She often told a story about a young person on an Israel experience, who when asked what he loved about Israel, replied with  "the garbage." Cheryl would then say how she prepared herself for whatever was coming next, hoping to quickly move on, only to be wowed by what came next. The participant went on to say how amazing and profound it was to see Hebrew garbage - the mundane elevated to something holy just by it happening in Israel. 
Working for Cheryl for 8 years, I too spent a lot of time standing outside her office door waiting to meet with her (I direct you to my predecessor at CJP, Jamie Bornstein's lovely Facebook post). During one of our meetings, she must have mentioned something about going to the dentist and expecting the usual exchange, she surprised me instead. She told me she loved going to the dentist because in that chair, no one could call her or email her or grab her for a meeting. She used the dentist office as a time of reflection.
And, as many have shared, it was a pleasure to be in Israel with her and even more so, to be part of her team that helped provide an Israel experience for others. I will not forget how much joy she got sharing her special Israel connections with the Follow Me to Israel groups. Follow Me embodied Cheryl's love of Israel and she built the itinerary so participants had that "dentist chair" time to reflect on their relationship while also getting the chance to experience some Hebrew garbage - holiness in the mundane that can only happen in Israel with Cheryl. In her memory and honor, I hope you all find yourself in Israel soon, and when you are their, think how happy she would be for you.

So warm, so loving, so polite and so fierce! Cheryl was an example to all of us of making a difference in big and small ways.  No one was too big or too small for Cheryl.  She brought Kane's donuts to the CJP Security Officers almost every morning! To spending time mentoring and mothering them, caring about them, and taking care of all of us.  
Her wit, her sarcasm, and her strength will be missed.  Too soon. 
But her example lives on in all of us she touched.

Dear Diane and Esther,
Michael and I were so shocked and saddened when we learned that Cheryl had died.  
I will always remember Cheryl at the Maimonides School in 1969 when I was Diane’s 4th grade teacher.  Cheryl’s school day ended at 3:00 and she often came up to my classroom and quietly and sat on the floor on the side of the room until our 4:00 dismissal, listening to whatever was going on in the class which frequently ended with my reading a chapter in a book. (Do you remember James and the Giant Peach?)   It was always a special pleasure for me to see Cheryl the adult at CJP events.
Michael always loved working with Cheryl in connection with the Boston-Haifa partnership, Birthright, and IACT and other communal activities.  She was always a dedicated professional and a good friend. She made an enormous contribution to strengthen Israel and the Jewish people, and she will be terribly missed.

Cheryl was a mentor and a friend.  From chairing the Boston Haifa connection to working on IACT, I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to experience Cheryl's love for Israel, the Jewish people, the Boston community, and the next generation.  She taught me so much about persistence, patience, and the pursuit of making the world a better place.  She was so gifted in bringing people into her circle in order to help her accomplish her nonstop pursuit of greater impact.  Almost every trip I took to Israel included Cheryl at my side as a partner, guide, and spiritual leader.  I send my deepest sympathies to Cheryl's mother and sister and please know how much she was respected and loved by so many

It's me again. Read my last posting first, this is Part 2.

Around that time, Cheryl helped me gain the confidence and break the shame around what I really wanted to do for my career:  Shoah memory. She encouraged my early writing with The Times of Israel, where I have published 300 articles since 2012. Except for my own wonderful mother, there is no single person on Earth who has supported my writing on the topic and teaching on this topic like Cheryl Aronson did. Once I became more secure in my voice as a writing of Shoah articles where I am not "in" the article, Cheryl helped me do what was my greatest accomplishment at federation: pilot half a dozen service-learning Shoah memory mission to Europe, where half the students were Jewish and half were SOC. Only Cheryl -- trust me on this one here -- would allow one of her subordinates to dream big like that, to access the resources, and then to get all the PR. Barry Shrage was wonderfully saying how he took the credit, but Cheryl did the work. I am here to tell you that the process worked in the other direction too, in terms of those below.  Go ahead and Google how many press articles we got for what I called "Together, Restoring Their Names." I am telling you, you will not find the name Cheryl Aronson anywhere. And I am telling you that without her guidance and permission and belief in me, and her deep understanding of what people needed to fulfill themselves, I would never have spent an incredibly 5 years developing that now-defunct program "Together, Restoring Their Names." 

That's just really one piece of what Cheryl did for me. One needs to keep it professional here, like Olivia Coleman on The Crown which I know Cheryl watched. Also, in 2016 or 2017, Cheryl and I went to Vegas and took a photo at a Sex and the City-themed slot machine. We were both BIG fans of the show. Does anyone have that photo, seriously? I sent it to some colleagues at the time but lost it.

What can I say about my beloved friend and mentor since 2007, the woman who walked into BU Hillel in 1999 and took me on my first trip to Israel? The woman whose death has torn a whole in my heart and my life since Monday.

I am blessed to have been one of the last in a long line of women and men whom Cheryl mentored closely and personally during her lifetime of service and devotion to the Jewish people. I knew all along that there were other people before me, since some of them I met personally and others she mentioned to me from time to time and still others I heard about later, that they were a person (thinking of Rabbi M. Creditor) who was close to Cheryl and called her a mentor. 

Did you know that one human heart could hold enough room in it for so many people who need the nurturing and stability that she provided? Cheryl's love for her people did not diminish as she added more mentees through the years. Actually, she connected those people with each other and many of them went on to (i.e.) run Hillels or consult for Birthright or bring Holocaust education to StandWithUs. 

I spoke to Cheryl on the phone almost weekly the past 3 years. She brought me through my most personally trying times when I suffered mental episodes. She was literally there for me in 2014 and again in 2020 when I did not see a way out. Tears are coming to my eyes again now, like when I tried to watch the video of the funeral. You can't talk about surviving the worst times of your life with the love of friend who you just became bereft of, and not start to cry. That is part of bearing witness to being human. I learned that too from Cheryl.

There are 100 lessons and insights I took from Cheryl, we all did. But I want to say here the one that is most personally relevant to me since about 2012, so it is very specific but others will relate to how Cheryl operated with this.

Esther and Diane,
I am filled with sadness  upon learning of Cheryl's death.  I never realized our birthdays are so close.  Cheryl was born 3 days after me.   So although we were a year apart in school we were actually the same age.  Going all the way back to our teen years I remember a kind girl who I knew would never gossip or be mean.  Later when we were adults and seeing each other at Chabad,  I appreciated how sweet she was with my parents and welcoming she was of my family.   Her ability to listen made her a very special person.  Sending my condolences to you both.  I know you both must be heartbroken to loose someone so precious in your life.

When my son was late applying for Birthright, Cheryl moved mountains to get him into the program.  She was a tireless worker, a dear friend and, in my  opinion, the the most outstanding member of CJP.  I doubt we will ever see her achievements rivalled.  Every time I pass High Street or visit our homeland, Israel, I will miss her.  

It is only in the past few years that I  had the privilage to meet Cheryl 
She made such an impression on me…  She was a kind intelligent woman, with a huge heart. She was a real Lady! She always spoke wisely keeping others in mind. It’s hard to speak of her in the past tense.
Together with the entire staff at The Inbal Hotel, I send our deepest condolences to the family and friends.

I would like to stay in touch with Cheryl's friends and am happy to share the few words I spoke at her funeral for those who could not attend in person or were unable to hear it on the video.   

After speaking with some lovely people after the funeral, I realized that many did not know Cheryl outside of work.  She was a beautiful person with a heart of gold.   And she will be missed more than she will ever know.

Cheryl left an incredible legacy on both sides of the Atlantic, having led CJP's Boston-Haifa connection for so many years and building and stewarding IACT. I was always so moved by Cheryl's quiet, unassuming, and committed leadership. She had a big heart and fostered the same in others, The butterfly effect of the connections she forged and the experimentation she nurtured through her passion, smarts, and caring will not be understood for many years.  Her memory..and indeed the seeds she planted...will certainly be a blessing. What a tragic loss. 

I thought of Cheryl as a kind of sister.   Our areas of responsibility were complementary and interdependent.  I wish Cheryl could hear the outpouring of respect and gratitude voiced here.  What I most admired about Cheryl was her fortitude.  Let's be real: as a female leader, Cheryl had to put up with a lot.  Often her accomplishments were minimized, or overlooked entirely, or attributed to other people. Sometimes people felt entitled to criticize her work without understanding its scope or significance.  Cheryl took these slings and arrows with dignity.  She kept her eyes on the prize: the well-being of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.  Most remarkably, Cheryl gave abundant support and encouragement to others while receiving so little herself.  Her memory is a blessing and an inspiration.

I only got to know Cheryl about 7 years ago when I became a Boston-Haifa volunteer and starting going to Haifa with CJP.  From the moment I met Cheryl, it was obvious that her love of Israel, devotion to the Boston Jewish community and dedication to its partnerships were deep core values. The excitement she exuded about these motivated and inspired each of us. I was always moved by how Cheryl made EVERYONE feel like she was not only a mentor but a best friend, whether you knew her for 30 years or one year.  She had the biggest heart of anyone I have met.  I will miss her dearly. Having known her, even for such a short time, is a blessing and motivating force for good.  My sincere condolences.

While Cheryl has been my colleague at Hillel for the past several years, I first got to know her early in my career (nearly 20 years ago) when she led the Boston-Haifa connection at CJP and I was bringing teens from the Boston JCC to Haifa on exchange trips.  Her passion and deep commitment to the Jewish people, Jewish education and Israel were evident in every interaction with her then and now.  May you be comforted during this difficult time by knowing that Cheryl's memory is a blessing to so many whose lives she touched.

Cheryl was such a kind, sweet, friendly, and caring person. We have known her for many years, and have witnessed her intense passion for the state of Israel (where she traveled several times a year giving tours), her  tireless efforts for local Jewish and Israeli agencies, her genuine interest  in others, and her devotion to her family. I came to know Cheryl 10 years ago at CJP. It didn’t take us that long to be friends. My favorite memory of Cheryl is how she told me the stories of her Birthright trips to Israel. I saw the land of Israel with a different lens for the first time, listening to Cheryl’s narration, knowing her love for that land. I am very proud that I had the opportunity to know Cheryl and share smiles and a few laughter together. Oh, how I wish I had that opportunity once more. When the Gardner comes and takes his favorite flower from his garden, who am I to say ‘not fair.’ I believe someday we will meet again; you will be waiting to say hello again – until then, farewell, my friend, farewell!

We lost an extraordinarily special leader. Cheryl inspired me as an IACT Coordinator and was always there to offer support. She made everyone feel special and cared for. I’ll never forget the long evening call we had as we discussed the trajectory of my career. She made it seem like she had all the time in the world and it meant to much. She reiterated that she would always be there for me, and I’m sure she would say that to everyone and truly mean it. Cheryl, we all miss you terribly.

What shocking and heartbreaking news. We lost a true lover of Zion, an ardent Israel advocate, a wonderful colleague, and a real mensch.  Such a sad, sad day. May Cheryl's memory forever be a blessing - Baruch Dayan Emet.

I was fortunate enough to have worked with Cheryl on several projects over the years.  Her dedication and determination were of the highest order as she worked to promote and defend Israel. Her loss is a clarion call for those of common minds to carry on in her memory. Baruch Dayan Ha'Emet..

 I first met Cheryl during after giving a lecture in Lexington in 2001. She reached out to me, took over my schedule, and guided me through the ins and outs of the Boston Jewish community. After that I had the privilege of hosting her on many of her Israel trips. In particular I remember the "women's spiritual odyssey" that I guided together with Rabbi Meir Sendor. Visiting Cheryl at the CJP became a regular habit for me whenever I was in Boston. The last time -pre-Corona- I brought my daughter Einat along and she received us in the middle of a busy day (all her days seemed to be busy) with her typical enthusiasm and graciousness. She was a wonderful person, a dedicated servant of the Jewish people and a huge resource for the State of Israel. 

Oh Cheryl, how I will miss our Tuesdays at 6.

I was lucky enough to have known Cheryl since she joined Hillel International in 2020. She always had a smile on her face and would message me on zoom calls about how nice it was to see me on this call and that she was jealous I went to school in paradise as she called UCSB. She was the first person to congratulate me when I got a promotion and had such a large heart. Cheryl impacted so many and had such a love for the Jewish people and Israel.

Work took Cheryl to Israel many times a year.  My volunteer activities with the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry took me a few times.  We often spoke about how wonderful it would be to be there at the same time.  We finally got our wish about 15 years ago. We had a great time at the Birthright mega event and we were absolutely delighted on several occasions when we ran into each other by accident just walking down the street.  This is my favorite picture.  Many visitors to Israel take pictures of themselves at the Kotel or at various tourist sites.  For Cheryl and me we managed to grab some time to relax in a coffee shop on Emek Rephaim.  The joy of this picture showing two ladies relaxing and enjoying a cup of coffee. For us this was so special because it captured the normalcy of being together in our ancient homeland.
Isn't that what Israel is supposed to be, a place where Jews could relax and enjoy our ancient homeland like normal people.

I had the privilege of working with Cheryl for many decades as a partner and colleague in the Boston Jewish community. She was always up for a good laugh, but also ready to dig into the hard work of building and supporting  programs that would benefit the Jewish people. She was a great colleague. The world, and specifically the Jewish world, is a better place because of Cheryl's time among us. The loss of Cheryl leaves a great void for so many of us who worked with her over the decades. Her good deeds and impact on those she worked with and for will carry on for generations to come. May her memory be a continued blessing for all who knew her and for her family and loved ones in particular.

I worked directly for Cheryl Aronson for three years. We traveled the US together extensively, which is a different level of getting to know someone.

Cheryl walked her talk. I remember one trip to NYC, the turnstile to the subway was broken, so you could just walk through. We were running late to a meeting and it would have been an easy excuse not to pay. She refused and insisted on finding a turnstile that worked because that was the ethical thing to do.

She was always one of the most perceptive people in the boardroom and could write manifestos on her BlackBerry. Her number one rule was always, “I don’t care what it is. Communicate. No surprises.”

She pushed me to be better and taught me a lot about how to manage a team. She knew how to build genuine relationships and sustain them. Years after I left CJP, she would post nice messages on my LinkedIn milestones and Facebook posts. She remembered people’s birthdays and names of their kids. She cared deeply for her team and was supportive through a death in my family and my having knee surgery, sending a shiva basket and get well treats. Pre-COVID she insisted if you had a cold that you should rest and not work, she always brought back small gifts for her staff when she traveled, noshes for our team from the local doughnut or chocolate shop, and wrote handwritten thank you notes. 

She was unapologetically Jewish, took the time to prep for Shabbat and every holiday, even if that meant postponing an important meeting…something that I try to emulate on a minor scale especially now that I no longer work in Jewish nonprofit. She brought her whole self. She loved her work and I will always be in awe of her passion for Israel and the Jewish community. 

Cheryl, every time I drink a Diet Coke, I’ll think of you. May your memory be a blessing.

I am so grateful to have known and worked with Cheryl z"l. I can hardly believe she is gone. Her creativity, drive, and devotion inspired me so deeply, and will continue to sustain me.

I too have warm memories of Cheryl. The most memorable ones took place in Israel, a place that she deeply loved. She did so much to bring so many Jews in the Boston area to Israel and to help them love and engage with the place. Yehi zichra barukh. 


I can’t believe that I can’t just pick up the phone and ask Cheryl to explain this. I did not know Cheryl as long as some, and I didn’t know her as well as others, or as well as I would’ve liked. Even so, she was my friend. Just before Shabbat, we were talking about job titles. She said, “When I get to the gates of ha’olam ha’ba [the world to come] no one is going to ask me what my title was. I’m going to say hi, I’m Cheryl and hope they’ll let me in.” She was all about creating meaningful experiences for our students and creating opportunities for them to connect and learn. I will always admire her drive and vision, and the tireless work she did for so many years that impacted so many.

May Cheryl's memory be a blessing, and may her family find comfort in their memories of Cheryl, and in the closeness of community and loved ones.

The world lost the most warm, loving, encouraging, inspiring Jewish leader, suddenly today. Cheryl was a mentor, a friend and most of all a role model to me. She showed me what it means to not only be passionate and love Israel, but to do the work on the ground as well. She changed SO many lives through her lifetime and I feel so lucky to have known her and worked for her. I hope to become even half the person Cheryl was. Along with missing her terribly, I will especially miss her checking in and her loving Facebook comments on my posts 💔

I have never met someone who has truly found and embodied their passion the way Cheryl did. You could feel it in everything she said, and everything she did. I first met Cheryl in Israel when I was introduced to the IACT initiative. But what Cheryl didn't know then, was how much she impacted me years prior when I first went on Birthright. It is due to her efforts and passion for the IACT movement, Israel, and her commitment to the Jewish people that I am where I am today. I cannot thank Cheryl enough for her support and will miss her dearly. 

I have worked with Cheryl Aronson throughout my Hillel career.  I worked with her directly when we were one of the first IACT groups for Birthright at Northeastern.  We worked together in Israel and also Ukraine.  When I worked at Clark Hillel she was instrumental for us continuing our strong relationship with IACT She was such a strong inspiration to me and to many colleagues in the Jewish world.  She will truly be missed.


Dear Esther and Diane,

Our hearts go out to you and your family. Cheryl was such a lovely, warm and loving person. It was always a joy to talk to her whenever she pulled into your driveway. We will cherish the memories of many 4th of July celebrations on the Boston Esplanade.

Words cannot express adequately how sad and deeply shocking it is to know that my dear friend Cheryl “Tzippi” Aronson z”l was burried today given her untimely death. Our friendship has spanned nearly three decades and it has been a privilege to have Tzippi as a friend, mentor, confidant and colleague nearly my entire professional career. In addition to family, she had devoted her life to Jewish communal service and especially educating/inspiring the next generation of Jews to deepen their connection to our homeland Israel. She was a giant in the field of experiential Israel/Zionist education and her deep love of Zionism, Israel, Am Yisrael, was infectious as well as moving. She has had and her legacy will continue to have a profound impact on literally thousands of young adults who have experienced a myriad of programs that Tzippi either developed or had her fingers in. I will greatly miss our long talks, phone calls, reunions in Israel or at conferences and regular texts to check in on family. It was a privilege to be in her presence and her infectious passion, drive, commitment as well as smile will be etched in me forever. I have no doubt that those of us who have been touched by Tzippi over the years, will continue to carry the passion, Jewish pride, love of Zionism/Israel and Am Yisrael for years to come as well as continue to pass these lessons on for years to come. May Tzippi’s memory always be for a blessing.

Thank you for all of the times you took us to dinner and all the candy you gave us that caused a big fight but a great trading market and friendship in the end.( we are sorry for all the times we fought in front of you, it was all out of love)

Cheryl was the first staff person I met other than Barry Shrage and Martin Abramowitz when I joined CJP. We started at the same time, at a retreat on Cape Cod. Friends and colleagues during my decade at CJP, Cheryl grew in wisdom, impact and every kind of beauty for many years after I left CJP and I thought of her always as a truly exceptional yet always kind leader. Cheryl was Moses, she had a calling from G-d to spread her love of Israel to all Hillel Professionals and beyond. She was the light at the end of the tunnel, surprisingly when educating about Israel, it can be difficult to carry on sometimes. Cheryl was always there with her “secret sauce” to encourage us IACTs. She always just knew in her soul that Israel has a place on college campuses and she would fight tooth and nail to support any IACT and Hillel. Cheryl had so much wisdom and knowledge to offer, she strategically knew what would work for each specific campus she worked with. 
I feel honored to have known Cheryl for the past 2 years. I will continue to support the pro Israel cause while educating the next generation of Israel Advocates. I know this is what Cheryl would want. I hope in the coming months, we can all find a way to keep Cheryl's memory alive. Learn about Israel, visit Israel, take a class on the conflict or learn some new fun facts about Israel. Whatever you choose to do, Cheryl would be proud of you. Stand up for what you believe in a little more firmly this week, show up in the spaces you always wished you could show up in. I had the privilege of working with Cheryl on the Birthright Education Committee. Today at the Birthright Steering committee meeting, I said that everyone was talking about what she did and how talented she was, I wanted to talk about two things she wasn't good at! She wasn't good at being a colleague - to work with her was to befriend her, to connect with her - it was never just business with her. And she wasn't good at being passive - she was an active enthusiastic passionate participant in everything she did!  She understood that when the meeting ended -the work began and to prove that, I read one of her amazing, thoughtful, insightful, post-meeting emails  -sent just last week. I met Cheryl shortly after moving to Boston in early 1995. She took me under her wing as a fellow graduate of the JTS-Columbia School of Social Work Jewish Communal Services program. Cheryl advised me where to live and how to find a young adult Jewish community. When I began working at JCRC she became a trusted colleague and friend.  When I was exploring working on campuses, Cheryl offered such wise and insightful advice.  Cheryl was such a kind presence with a fierce love for the Jewish people. I will miss her and the Jewish world has lost one of its great leaders.  

My wife and I are truly saddened by Cheryl’s passing! I spent inspired years traveling to Israel with Cheryl and enjoying her insights on our trip.

I met Cheryl in fall 2020 when I started interviewing for a position on her team. We hit it off from that first interview, and it was as if we had known each other for years. During our weekly meetings we would talk and talk about Judaism, Israel and the work we were doing, but even before talking about work she would always ask how I’m doing – she sincerely cared about the response and always listened. Cheryl was a very encouraging supervisor and never missed an opportunity to tell me thank you or good job. She appreciated Jewish people from all background and was genuinely interested in learning about different communities – including my own Indian Jewish roots.  I feel grateful for the time we worked together. May her memory be a blessing.


We will always miss Cheryl.  She has always been an inspiration and huge dedicated supporter of our everything we did for students at Clark U Hillel.  She was always there for guidance and meaningful advice motivating and brilliantly  lead our ICT Israel Birthrite coordinators each year in the quest to  connect students with Israel.   We chatted often constantly commented and liked each other's Israel and Hillel posts.   


I am saddened to hear about the untimely passing of Cheryl. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Cheryl. She was a true visionary - dedicated to entire Jewish world. Her gentle demeanor, style, grace and beautiful personality should be a example for all of us.  May her memory be a blessing and may she Rest In Peace. 

Cheryl had a beautiful soul.  She devoted her life to tikun olam - working for the good of others and inspiring all of us to join her.  Her commitment to Haifa-Boston, where we knew her best, helped the  partnership to grow in unexpected and lasting ways … and her sweet manner and humility will forever be her hallmark. I'm inspired by Cheryl's service of behalf of the Jewish people, More than what she accomplished and brought to life, I'm inspired by how she did it. She  offered mentorship and guidance to me at pivotal moments in my life, and reading some of the other comments written here, I know I'm not alone in how I experienced the way she lived out the values of Ahavat Yisrael and Ahavat Chinam. May we all draw inspiration from her life to show kindness to others the way Cheryl showed it to us.

Although I didn't know Cheryl that well, I was saddened/shocked to hear about her passing.  I will always be grateful to both Cheryl and Judy Krell (of CJP) for supporting the Malden Jewish community.


Leaders don’t always know they’re destined to be leaders. Sometimes it takes an external person’s recognition of your potential to set you off on your path… Cheryl Aronson was, and will continue to be, that force that saw that potential in so many of us..
 
I had the honor of working with Cheryl as an IACT in Boston. Her endless encouragement and belief in me not only shaped my work experience, but ultimately the course of my life.. 

Thank you Cheryl, for all that you saw in me. For all that you praised in me. For all that you sowed in me. For all that you actualized in me to pass on to others.

 Your light will continue to illuminate all who hear of the legacy and the beautiful global community of leaders you built, and the memories of shared experiences  with you will continue to bring joy, smiles, tears, and peace to all those who were graced by them. 

You were not only the change you and we wanted to see in the world... you were the agent who helped others join you in that mission. I believe they call that legendary. Thank you. 

Cheryl or “Tzipi” z"l, as we affectionately called her, was a Giant of the Jewish people, who accomplished and created so much in her short life. It is hard to put in words the impact she had on thousands of Jewish souls. Cheryl was mishpacha, family, and our love for her, as well as the deep friendship we shared over the past two decades will be engraved in our memory. Every day, we saw how her passion, drive, and commitment influenced so many people. The smile on her face, her excitement in greeting Jewish students in Israel or on campuses across the US was infectious. She created and was in the driver’s seat of so many revolutionary initiatives and projects that transformed Jewish life on campuses and in communities. She was so passionate and so determined to create facts on the ground for Jewish learning and Zionism filled with activism. For decades Cheryl created these facts and had a profound impact on so many. Cheryl was a “doer,” she was all about taking action and making a difference “now.” That was seen in all of her achievements. What Cheryl taught me, my colleagues and my family will stay with us forever and will inspire all of us to carry on working for what she believed in -- this is the best way to honor a truly remarkable person. She will be missed!

Cheryl taught me so much about Ahavat Israel, optimism and joy. She loved the Jewish People with all of her heart and soul and shared that love and passion with anyone she encountered. We shared a love of Birthright and of bringing as many students to Israel as possible. We talked about it a lot. I texted her on Sunday when I was at Ben Gurion airport greeting students from Ukraine on a Birthright trip for the first time in 2 years. She was so excited and wrote me back right away: 

"Wow. How moving! As you may know, for years I led our partnership with Dnipro in Ukraine. I've been several times and the joy coming from the community in being Jewish and connecting with Israel is so inspiring! I miss seeing that. So special.  Sounds so inspirational. Kol Hakavod!!!!"

She will be sorely missed and her legacy will live on in the thousands upon thousands of people that she touched and influenced.

I am grateful I had the opportunity to know Cheryl throughout my time at CJP and now Birthright Israel Foundation. Interacting with Cheryl always filled me with a deep sense of comfort, support and inspiration. I will never forget how ready, willing and able Cheryl was to respond to my outreach; it was palpable how strongly she felt about doing all she could to help bring as many young Jewish adults to Israel as possible. The world has lost a gem. Thank you, Cheryl, for being you. 

To write in the past tense about one who was so filled with life is a task filled with dissonance.  

Cheryl Aronson z"l was a dear friend and cherished colleague. For many years, I witnessed how she always put the good of the Jewish People and Israel first. First, before other considerations, whether personal, organizational or political. First because she drew her power, passion, and purpose from her deep connection to Judaism, the Jewish People and Israel. First because the values upon which they are based are positive, good, and aspirational. First because she understood that if we give just one more Jewish child, student, adult, or family the opportunity to connect with the authenticity, wisdom, and beauty of Judaism, the Jewish People, and the Jewish State, then the Jewish future would be more secure, and the world itself would be a better place. True Tikun Olam, from the ground up. Emet MeHaretz Titzmach. 

As a professional, I was privileged to share in her vision. Cheryl was the creative founder of many thriving initiatives, like IACT. As a Jewish leader of the first degree, she mentored, inspired, and supported. She encouraged creative thinking and actively enabled others to implement new ideas that served the Jewish People.  

As a friend, she was generous and quick to lend a hand. She loved being with her family – and the many other families who saw her as one of their own. To all such families, and particularly to her mother Esther and sister Diane, I say: Tenuchamu Min HaShamayim, May Heaven Console you.

Finally, noting my close relationship with Cheryl for 20+ years, many messages have arrived saying: "Sorry for your loss."  The notion is correct -- I will miss Cheryl dearly. However, as a person who worked tirelessly for Klal Yisrael, her passing truly signifies a loss for the Jewish People as a whole. Thus, it is very much “our” collective loss – and an incredibly painful, tragic and incomprehensible one.

As director of  the International School at Oranim College in Israel, for many years I had the honor of working with Cheryl z"l.  Together we conceived and implemented many projects.  She was the best partner anyone could hope for.  From Cheryl we would receive a grand vision,  gentle guidance, and much support. Everything she did was out of concern and love for the  the "Jewish People" writ large and for Jewish people everywhere and anywhere.   She claimed that she learned the concept of “mutuality” from us, and that through our work together we actually created “mifgash.” Actually she was our teacher. She showed us - in her calm, elegant, dedicated way - what a  true Jewish leader looks like.  Her presence in this world was a blessing. May her memory will be as well.    

I have known and worked with colleagues in many communities and many organizations none approached Cheryl’s grace and talent and humility. I watched Cheryl serve as a true role model for so many always offering encouragement and words of advice that will always be remembered by those of us whose lives she enriched on levels too many to mention. May we all be mindful of the the lessons we learned and then Cheryl;s memory will truly live on and be for a blessing.

I write today in tears... In the Fall of my senior year in college I picked up the book 'The Haj' by Leon Uris and it forever changed my life. I've had many angels who entered my life to help guide me along my path, the first was Leon Uris who's book changed my life's course almost immediately. The descriptions of the Land and People of Israel that were so beautifully woven into the story made an immediate impression on me. Upon finishing this long novel over Thanksgiving break I immediately declared to my parents, 'I want to go to Israel'. But I didn't want a vacation, my soul yearned to experience Israel and its people.I researched and found what I was sure was the perfect option, Project Otzma, a 10 month social service program in Israel. One problem, you had to be sponsored by a local Jewish Federation that was associated with the program and, Columbia, SC didn't cut it. My application was first rejected and after some brainstorming my parents realized that their life long friends were very active in the Federation in Boston. A couple of quick calls later and I was off to Boston to be interviewed for the program and this is where my second angel entered...Cheryl Aronson. Cheryl was a young staffer at the Federation at that time and was willing to put her neck out a little bit (and, wink, wink...maybe slightly bend the rules a little) to get me into the program. Her decision forever changed my life. I came on the program fell in love with the country (and my wife).Throughout the years, Cheryl would occasionally bounce into my life ...at my first job in Boston; chance meetings in Jerusalem; an occasional conference; working together at my first job in Israel and the occasional chance encounters over the years. Every time I had the pleasure of seeing Cheryl it was the same...positive, energetic, smiles & sincere caring about where we were in life. Cheryl, thank you for being my angel and having faith in me so many years ago. I hope I've lived up to that faith. 

I am shocked. Cheryl was truly one of the greats. I remember first meeting her, about thirty years ago. Who was that very competent, professional and pretty woman wearing a headband in her shiny black hair? Our paths crossed periodically since then. Every exchange we had was memorable--Cheryl was always steady, smart, and compassionate.  She had great instincts and channeled me to my second "stint" at Hebrew College, where I worked for nearly a decade. She "got" and gave voice to things that no one else did--realizing, for example, just what "student recruitment" entailed.  She stayed above the fray, her big heart and love for Israel and the Jewish people being her true north. What a loss to the entire community. 

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Cheryl, a wonderful colleague and friend to all she knew.

Chery Aronson was a beautiful human being and a constant friend.  Her love for Israel and the Jewish people always shone through her kind words and her dedicated work on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people.  She was an inspiration for all who shared in her work and was blessed with a kind soul and a shining character.

Cheryl hired me at CJP as an intern and I worked with her for over 10 years on Boston-Haifa and Israel and Overseas. She was a guide, a mentor and an inspiration at every step. Her devotion for Israel and the Jewish people was intoxicating. Her love for Jewish education had no bounds. It was a privilege to learn from her and be part of team Cheryl on this journey. Most importantly, she was a caring, loving friend who encouraged me to be better. We lost a beautiful soul who always put others  before herself. Her life was one of service and avodat kodesh. Will miss you dearly Cheryl. 

I am deeply saddened to learn of Cherry’s passing. I had the fortune of working with Her very early in both our careers. She was always a supportive and collaborative colleague. I always admired her career path and accomplishments over all these years from afar. She touched the lives of so many. That was the comment she left on my post a few days ago; an image of my son,  Yanai turning 6 months old and a picture of the Kotel in the snow.
There was nothing Cheryl loved more than a beautiful image of Israel.
There was nothing she loved more than the Jewish people: Am Israel. 
Eretz Israel. 
From the first time we met, during my 1st year of Shlichut and then from the moment she became part of the Hillel International team, we were two peas in a pod. 
Our WhatsApp conversation was like our mini Kotel: we shared the best of moments and the worst. 
You were always there for me, personally and professionally and I will forever be grateful for that. 
When Yanai was born, you sent him the most perfect onesie which reads: “I’m not yelling, I’m Israeli”.
You knew exactly what I would love. 
And what would make me laugh. 
You ALWAYS lived your truth Cheryl.
And I promise you I will always live mine.
And now I will fight the good fight even harder.
 "Next year in Jerusalem. Together.”
I will get there, I promise. 
And you will be right by my side. 
We will make sure as many young people can get there, and allow themselves to simply fall in love, for the very first time. 
To know that they are a part of the greatest story ever told: the story of the Jewish people.

For those who knew Cheryl outside of her impeccable professional career and deep faith community, you may also have known that she could not see very well at night 😎 (or in the rain)- and so I was blessed to be her driver. She hired me at first to take her to the airport for travel to Israel and over time she would call me regularly to take her other places. It was during these special times that Cheryl and I became friends. She was the kindest and most caring person I know. Our conversations covered every subject under the sun and they could be deep and profound or light hearted and funny. Cheryl, a devout Jew, and I, a faithful Catholic, together we traded stories of our rituals and traditions through the changing seasons of our lives. In no time being Cheryl’s driver was no longer a job- it was a pleasure. Like two friends getting together for Sunday trips to Brookline. Im so sad that she is gone from my life. She was deeply committed to her mother, Esther, and wholly dedicated to her job which was her life’s work. Rest in peace my dear friend Cheryl. I shall never forget you. 

I had the privilege of working with Cheryl on IACT at NYU. Cheryl was the consummate educator and professional, exactly the kind of person you would always want to work with -- and want to be. She would always cut straight through hype and window dressing and focus simply on what was important. I will miss her dearly.

To lose such a bright light and warm heart at so young an age is truly heartbreaking.  She was a generous, spirited and creative colleague for the years I worked at CJP.  My thoughts are with her family and close friends.  My deepest condolences.

I am shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Cheryl Aronson. I looked up to Cheryl as a strong professional woman role model from the time I started working in the Jewish community at Hillel Council of New England in 1997. Every interaction I had with her over the years confirmed that she was a no-nonsense, hard-working, deeply committed professional. Her death is a loss to the Jewish people and to our profession. May her memory be for a blessing. 

Oh dear.  Cheryl, you were just such a visionary.  You loved the Jewish people, you loved Israel 💙  You were poignant, you were calm.  Most of all, you were not just professional but in this mystical way you were warm and kind and caring all at once.  You saw the good in every person - and made them see it, too.

You empowered us.  We were motivated to work hard - and stay focused as you always mentioned - simply because we were inspired by your dedication and the classy way you went about everything.  Small talk about Israeli culture (Eyal Golan! Kochav Nolad!) only added to the pleasure of working with you 😊

Cheryl, it is so beautiful to see hundreds of people not only writing to say they care for you - they are writing full-fledged paragraphs about the impact you had on them.  Stories of your kindness and enveloping presence abound.

I'll never forget the time I took myself on a solo date to Zaftig's one evening a few years ago, only to hear two couples sitting next to me gushing about - who else - Cheryl Aronson.  "She is the Queen of the Jews," they said 👑  And how true!  I am so glad I made sure to let you know right away 😊 You deserve every praise.

You have added immensely to the well-being of the members of the Jewish community, a positive radiance that will last forever.  My only hope is that God hears our prayers and gives you the nicest spot in the next world.  

As Arinne wrote, you lived your life in such a way that we have no doubt that your memory will be a blessing!  You have impacted generations of students - whether they know it or not - and the wheels you set in motion with Birthright Israel, Onward Israel, and so many programs will continue impacting Jewish youth far longer than any of us can even dream. As a CJP lay volunteer,  Cheryl was my treasured mentor who helped shape our efforts to improve Jewish lives.  Her life's work was always in service to others. She will be remembered by our partners around the globe who benefitted from her wisdom, her guidance and her neshama.  I will miss her smiling eyes, her laugh, her gentle style and her steadfast belief that we could always make the world a better place.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of my dear colleague Cheryl. She was a mentor and friend when I was at JCRC, and we had the opportunity to travel and work together in Haifa and in Dnipro as well as in Boston. I am so heartbroken at losing Cheryl.  I knew Cheryl over the last few years as she transitioned to Hillel, and so appreciated all the wisdom and passion she brought to every conversation.  She had the ability to deeply listen to others' ideas, and then always share insight that was new for me, and others in the conversation. She always enriched any conversation she was a part of. I met Cheryl over 35 years ago when she came to work at CJP in Boston and I became her first supervisor.  I knew in our very first conversation that her devotion to the State of Israel met and exceeded my own. We clicked immediately.  Her death leaves a deep hole in our professional community.

Cheryl was a beloved colleague, friend and mentee of mine (although I always told her she was MY mentor). She took me under her wing when I came to work for the Jewish community in 1990 as JCRC DIRECTOR! She taught me so much about Jewish life in the US  and in Israel. We travelled together to Israel and Ukraine and always loved being with each other. She was a consummate professional who loved her job, her community and her family. She will be greatly missed by all of us who loved and admired her. May her memory always be for a blessing z”l. And, Esther, may you be comforted with the mourners of Zion. She always told me you were part of my Boston fan club!! I loved her like a sister!

I had the honor to work with Cheryl as a Hillel colleague. She and I were around the same age and had many years of working at Federation before Hillel. I always felt we had a special connection because of our shared experiences. She was a special person, so passionate about her work and a wonderful colleague that understood the challenges of running a campus Hillel. I can't express the depth of my sorrow for her loss.

Tzipi and I first met when I was a student at CJP and we clicked instantly.  Our love of Israel and Judaism and of course, Rubin's, made us instant friends.  Tzipi was one of the warmest, caring people that I know.  I will miss her terribly.  May you be comforted among the mourners of Jerusalem and I hope the wonderful memories you have of Tzipi will comfort you during this difficult time.

Cheryl was a wonderful person and a true friend. I will miss her for the rest of my life. I have worked with her for 32 years at CJP and we became wonderful and loving friends.

Over the years that I worked in Jewish education,  Cheryl was central to our Israel programming. She was a constant and an inspiration.
My memories go further back though. Back at MVHA, when you were the backbone of that school we knew of your daughter, Cheryl.
That was so many years ago.  Cheryl was your daughter and she impacted upon so many, as did you, dear Mrs. Aronson. My heart goes out to you in sympathy. I know that Cheryl’s memory will be that of giant of her generation.

Cheryl was an incredible boss, mentor, and friend. I have so many great memories of my Friday conversations with her while we were both at CJP. Sometimes our conversations would go for well over an hour and I loved every second of those conversations. (I especially loved when we would chat about Israeli reality TV shows, such as Israel's version of "Big Brother.")

I also loved hearing Cheryl's travel stories - both the beautifully inspirational ones and the hilariously dramatic ones! 

Cheryl played such a formative role in helping me reconnect to my Kavkazi Jewish culture - professionally and personally. She has inspired me to become an advocate for Jewish communities of all shapes and sizes - especially in the pro-Israel space. 

Lastly, Cheryl was truly a modern Maccabee - a true champion for the Jewish people, for Israel, and all who care about the Jewish future. 

Cheryl was all about people. She loved being in the space of co-creation, dreaming big while being your biggest cheerleader and partner. She was the kind of person who always wrote a note to wish you mazel tov, check in after a challenge or remember your birthday. I was so impressed by her presence when I first met her. Over the years working at Hillel, she became a great thought partner and colleague. Her warmth  and care was woven into everything she did, from talking about talent to planning an Israel conference and more. She was a blessing to this world, and will be deeply missed.

Cheryl was a tremendous professional and brought out the very best in everyone around her.  She set big goals and high standards and encouraged everyone to meet them.  She also didn't mind being hustled for more resources even when she had to say no.

Her kindness and warmth will be missed


Cheryl and I were BFFs and became best friends in 1976 at Camp Yavneh when we were both new campers in the same bunk. In 1980, we traveled to Israel together—the first of many Israel trips for Cheryl and my only one so far.  she was a bridesmaid at my wedding and was truly like a sister to me. I feel I am still in shock by the news of her passing. We used to meet every year for our annual Day After Thanksgiving BFF Day and share memories together, but have not been able to since the Pandemic.  I miss her already so much and don't know when I will be able to accept the fact that she is gone and that my memories of her will have to get me through this intense feeling of loss. Cheryl was the most giving and thoughtful person I know - she gave of herself so unselfishly to her family and friends and touched the lives of so many. May Cheryl rest in peace, and may her memory be for a blessing.
