Bertram “Bert” Gold, 97, died peacefully at a hospice care center on Friday morning December 15, 2023.
Bert was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and went to high school at Boys High. During his childhood and teen years he helped his parents at their family poultry market. He became a skilled chicken flicker but did not pursue poultry as his career.
He enlisted and served in the United States Army and after his military service, he completed a four year bachelor’s degree program at New York University.
After college, he worked for a short while in sales at Knickerbocker Toys. Bert’s sister, Sarah, introduced her friend Arlene to her older brother which led to their 70 year marriage. After marrying Arlene, he began working at his father-in-law‘s business, Artamount. For many years, he represented their line of stationery and leather goods as well as other companies. He traveled frequently while servicing business customers throughout New England, and New York State.
Bert & Arlene lived in Brooklyn for four years and then moved to the suburbs in Baldwin, New York. There they raised two sons, Kenneth and Barry. Bert was involved with athletics through much of his life. He played softball for the South Baldwin Jewish Centers men’s team. He loved spending summer weekends at Lido beach. For many years, he played pick-up basketball games at Merrick Park on weekends. After sustaining a basketball injury to his nose, he was encouraged to join a gym and workout regularly instead. Upon retiring to Boynton Beach, FL, Arlene tried to get him to become a golfer like her and her father. Bert found this game rather frustrating and was known to throw a club in the water after a bad shot. Not surprisingly, he gave up his golf game and returned to work, starting a second career as a driver’s education instructor. He did this for many years and enjoyed it. He was an avid New York Giants baseball fan until they betrayed him by moving to California. He remained an avid New York Giants football fan up until his death.
Bert and Arlene were able to retire to Boynton Beach Florida where they lived for 25 years. Their lives were made richer by being around many of their friends from New York, as well as the new friends that they made in Florida. For the last 3 years, he and Arlene have lived in Whitinsville, MA with Barry & Gabrielle. He enjoyed meeting and sipping Scotch with their close friends.
Bertram is survived by his beloved wife Arlene and sons Kenneth and Barry. Bert embraced his two daughter’s-in-law as his own daughters. Marian Gold and Gabrielle Gold became the “daughters” he never had. He loved his five grandchildren, Chelsea, Sasha, Ila, Lauren, and David. 2 ½ years ago, Lauren and her husband, Ian brought Bert’s one and only great grandchild, Noa, into the world. He enjoyed watching her grow through texted photos and videos. He is also survived by his beloved sister-in-law Helen and his beloved nieces and nephew, Karen, Sheryl and Leonard. Bert is predeceased by his parents, Max Gold and Gertrude Gold (Rosenberg), and his sister Sarah Greenberg (Gold).
A graveside service will be held at Mount Lebanon cemetery in Glendale Queens on Wednesday December 20 at 11am. An informal luncheon will follow.
