Peggy Davis Cunningham

Peggy Darlene Davis Cunningham born on April 3, 1934, in Pleasanton, TX passed away peacefully in Brentwood, Tennessee, on December 17, 2022. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Thomas Lee Cunningham. She is survived by her daughters, Stephanie Cunningham Richardson (husband David) and Melanie Cunningham Waltz (husband Reid) and grandchildren Sarah Mackenzie Waltz and Ethan Thomas Davis Waltz.

Peggy was a dedicated wife, mother, and friend. She used her many talents and gifts to better the lives of those around her. As a member of the Brentwood United Methodist Church since 1968, Peggy sang in the Chancel Choir, played in the handbell choir, illustrated many church cookbooks and was an active presence in the church halls.

Peggy had many jobs throughout her life when family demands allowed. She worked as a bank teller, a computer programmer (mainframes), a florist, and a caterer through Opryland U.S.A. Although she would never have called it a job, her work establishing Brentwood High School and the Band program was her labor of love. She was lovingly called “Mamma C” by all of her kids and her endless hours behind the scenes helped to shape the school, from the choices of school colors, to mowing the field for the band to practice, to sewing the band uniforms and creating the first banner that would lead the band proudly. Who could forget her roller skating though Brentwood’s first Pear Fest to make sure everything was running smoothly.

She was an avid gardener, accomplished golfer, bridge playing enthusiast, skilled seamstress, gifted artist (acrylic and watercolor mostly), and creative handy person. She was a doer and a fixer with joy in her soul. Peggy’s laughter, spirited and positive outlook on life, charitable heart, and willingness to be present with those around her will be missed! Without a doubt, she carried herself with poise, grace, and a pinch of grit. Her wit and spunk will live on for generations through her children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives she impacted.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm on January 4, 2023 at the Brentwood United Methodist Church. Service to start at 3:00 pm with internment following at the church columbarium. Honorary pallbearers will be the 1982-1985 Brentwood High School band kids and the Opryland gang, you know who you are.
