Gerald was born on April 3, 1939, in Hartford, Kentucky, to parents Earnie Daniel, a farmer and laborer, and Georgia (White) Daniel, the high school cafeteria manager. Gerald graduated from Hartford High School in 1957, where he starred on the school’s basketball team that made the Sweet Sixteen his senior season. He attended Berea College where he played basketball and majored in biology with a minor in chemistry.
After graduating from Berea College, Gerald attended Wake Forest College Bowman Gray School of Medicine in North Carolina, graduating with an M.D. in 1965. After a rotating internship at Greenville Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force as the Chief of the Air Force Medical Clinic at Tyndall Air Force Base.
In 1968, he began his residency in radiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon finishing his residency in 1971, he began as a radiologist at St. John’s Hickey Memorial Hospital (later St. John’s Medical Center) in Anderson, Indiana, doing general radiology and special procedures.
Gerald relocated to Brentwood, Tennessee, in 1988, and began practicing as a radiologist at Williamson Medical Center in Franklin, Tennessee. In 1991, he opened a solo radiology practice at Lewisburg Community Hospital (later Marshall Medical Center) in Lewisburg, Tennessee, where he would work until retiring from the full-time practice of medicine in 2005. His love of the practice of medicine led him to work part-time during retirement at hospitals in Kentucky and Tennessee before fully retiring in 2012.
Gerald is survived by his wife Joyce (Shively) Daniel, who he married on the campus of Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana. He is additionally survived by his children David (Rachel) Daniel, Deborah (Joseph) Cooper, Kasey (Scott) Galentine, and Baron (Jessica) Coleman, and grandchildren: Alexandra and Sydney Cooper; Grace, Ethan, and Allie Galentine; and Reagan, Pierson, Clara, Owen, William, George, Mary Helen, and John Coleman.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Earnie and Georgia Daniel, his brothers Earnie Walton Daniel and George Hilton Daniel, and his sister Celeste Sharp.
A Gathering of Family and Friends for Gerald will be held Monday, December 11, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Brentwood Roesch Patton Funeral Home, 9010 Church Street East, Brentwood, TN 37027. A Celebration of Life will follow the visitation beginning at 1:00 O'Clock in the afternoon. A Graveside service will follow the Celebration of Life at 2:30 PM at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN 37210.
