VALERIE SHARON RICHARDSON, daughter of the late Robert and Alice Richardson was born on September 30, 1949 in Washington, DC. Valerie was affectionately called “Val” by her Family and “Big V” by the people in the neighborhood. The Lord quietly called her home on March 23, 2021 at her residence in Snellville, Georgia.
Val was educated in Washington, D.C. where she attended Bancroft Elementary School, Gordon Jr. High School and Western Senior High. After High School, she decided to further her education at Federal City College in Washington, D.C. During this same period, Val also worked for VITRO in Silver Springs, Maryland as a contractor. Later, with her experience and expertise in working with the public, she was employed by DARCARS in College Park, Maryland as an Administrator for the Service Department. Val worked at DARCARS until she relocated to Snellville, Georgia in 2011 with her niece Patricia.
Val was baptized at the Alexander Memorial Baptist Church of Georgetown at an early age where she gave her life to Christ. For many years, Val was an active and devoted member of the church. She was a member of the Baptist Training Union, Usher Board, Drama Ministry, Sunday School, Hospitality and Choir. Along with being a Sunday School Scholar, she was also a Sunday School Teacher for over 10 years. During that time Val taught various classes with students ranging from Elementary School to High School. Val was a laid-back, no-nonsense person who loved life. She also had a love for children although she was never blessed to have any of her own. However, God still gave her the desires of her heart because Val always had somebody’s child. Whether she was babysitting, sitting with them in church as the adult figure, going on trips with them for fun and/or recreation or just for transportation needs. In all situations she cared for, trained, nurtured, and corrected them all as if they were her own. For these reasons and many more, the children loved her and enjoyed spending time with her.
Val also had a love and passion for reading, cooking and baking. Mystery and romance novels were some of her favorites along with those darn comic books. Growing up her cousin Wendy and others recall looking forward to getting a stack of comic books from Val after church or whenever visiting her at home on Walbridge Place. Walbridge Place holds special memories of good times with Val. However, when she wanted or needed quiet time, you could be sure that all you had to do was go upstairs to her room and there, Val would be watching television while drinking a tall glass of milk and eating cookies or something sweet. During that special quiet time, you knew disturbing her was not an option. Family was important to Val and she will forever be missed by all who loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted niece and nephew, Patricia Crawford (Wilbert), Sherwin Cody Lynch (Crystal); great nieces and nephews, Sherwin Jr., Dennis, Val, Rico, Frank IV, Karen, Angela, Maria, Eric, Dante and Amber; a dear friend Shelia Dillard and a host of other family and friends.
Val was preceded in death by her sisters Thelma C. Lynch, Mary A. Brown, Nephew Frank Lynch III and Great Nephew Keith Lynch.
