Theodore Summers, son of the late Turner and Sadie Powell Summers was born in Gibsonville, (Guilford County), North Carolina on August 15, 1939, and departed this life on Friday, December 30, 2022 in Washington, District of Columbia. He received his primary and secondary education in the public school system in Guilford County, North Carolina.
Theodore is one of 23 siblings from both father and mother two marriages. The children born of the marriage of Turner and Sadie are the late William Summers, Arthur Summers, Norman J. Summers, Odell Summers, and Winford Summers.
The last remaining sibling is his sister Guinevere Summers (Davis).
Theodore left North Carolina with his brother Arthur (Art) to work with his uncle at the Hillcroft Inn in York Harbor, Maine. By the end of summer he was offered employment to work for Mr. James McMillan Gibson, a private family, as their Butler/Chauffeur, traveling from York Harbor, Maine in the summer. To the District of Columbia, for a couple of months, to Palm Beach, Florida during the winter months. He served in that position for nine years. He was employed by BETCO Block and Products in Maryland as a machine operator. He later was employed by Mt. Airy Baptist Church and First Baptist Church as a maintenance engineer, in Washington, DC. He worked part-time at the Bulman, Dunie, Burke and Feld Law firm in Bethesda, then retired. His co-workers said he was a humble man and a hard worker, kind and caring to those around him.
Theodore met the love of his life in York Harbor, Maine, Barbara C. Of Philadelphia, PA, and they were united in Holy matrimony that summer on August 27, 1963. They relocated to Washington, DC, in the fall of 1963. From this union they have three children, twin daughters and one son.
Theodore gave his life to Christ in 1997 and joined Adonai Ministry International Church, in Washington, DC, Reverend Dr. Barbara C. Summers, Pastor and Founder, he was baptized, and received the right hand of fellowship. He served in the Deacon capacity for 22 years, Vice President of the AMI Corporation, and President of the AMI Men’s Auxiliary for 22 years.
Theodore loved his family and visited his home town as much as possible during his travel north and south. He loved good food and liked to cook on the charcoal grill smoking ribs, chicken and burgers. He enjoyed the Red Skins/Commanders games, and loved looking at westerns.
Theodore is survived by his wife Barbara; daughters, Cheryl D. Summers and Sharon Rene’ Summers, Washington, DC; sister Guinevere Summers-Davis of Gibsonville North Carolina; son, Theodore Marcus Summers, II (Antwanette) of
Laurel, Maryland; Ernest Yarborough, a dear friend of Washington, DC; grandsons, Durray M. Summers and Dane’ M. Summers, and Marchello Thomas of Washington, DC; Marcus I. Summers, and Matthew M. Summers of Temple Hills, Maryland; great grand-daughter Kyra Summers of Washington, DC; and a host of relatives and friends.
