Marjorie Lee Johnson

Marjorie Johnson was a native Washingtonian born to Mary Steele and Worth Falls on June 13, 1934.

Marjorie was a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.A. in English and Journalism, and completed studies for a Masters in General Administrative Management. She devoted 28 years to public service at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), Laurel, MD, the seventh largest water and wastewater agency in the United States. She served several positions including Assistant Public Information Officer, Executive Assistant to the General Manager, Executive Assistant to the Engineering Director, Director of Public Affairs, Director of Minority Affairs and Director of Communications. She retired as Official Agency Spokesperson in May, 2001.

Marjorie has served as the Prince George’s (MD) Residential Campaign Chairman for United Way and Chairman of Membership and Allocations. At the same time, Marjorie was a member of the United Way Regional Council and Board of Trustees; a member of the Public Relations Society of America; and has been Chairman of the Publications Committee for the American Water Works Association and editor of the Association’s newsletter. She was voted Chairman of Youth and Education – MD/DC Utilities Association and served as Association Secretary; served three terms as Chairman of the Board – American Red Cross (Prince George’s, MD); served several years on the Regional Consortium of Red Cross Chapters; and served four terms as Board of Elections Voter Judge in MD. Marjorie was selected to serve as a member of the National Advisory Group to the US Environmental Protection Agency on Water Quality Standards. Marjorie was awarded the Maryland Governor’s Citation for Community Service and was selected for inclusion in “Women of Achievement in Prince George’s County History.”

Since her retirement and move from Maryland to South Carolina in 2002, she served as President of the Richland Democratic Women; State Secretary and Richland Representative on the SC Silver Haired Legislature; a member of the Wildewood Women’s Club; was Wildewood Democratic Precinct Chairman; and served nine years as Board of Elections Poll Manager – Richland County.

In 2010, Marjorie was the official statewide Democratic Candidate for SC Secretary of State. Marjorie served on the Parish Advisory Council, St. John Neumann Church; and served four years as Speaker (President) of the SC Silver Haired Legislature. Marjorie was a Richland Delegation Nominee for Board of Elections; was appointed by the Governor (2014) and elected Chairman of the Board for Richland County Elections and Voter Registration until 2016.

Marjorie had a great love of flowers and was an avid gardener, spending endless hours with her hands in the dirt. Marjorie was also a “fashionista” and loved “dressing for the part”. She enjoyed crafts and was very talented with crewel and embroidery.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her mother Mary Steele, brother John Falls and husband Wilbur “Chief” Johnson.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, son Reginal “Skip” Johnson (Debra), daughter Medrina “Candy” Gilliam, grandsons Eric Johnson, Brian Johnson, Dominique Johnson and her sister Jeanette Cook. Special friend Clarence Jamerson and a host of nieces , nephews and friends.
