John David Charles, Sr. was born on July 26, 1942, in Lincolnton, North Carolina, to Reverend James Charles, Sr. and Gussie Mae Johnson Charles. He was affectionately known by many nicknames, including "Poor Boy" and "Boot" to name a few. After completing his education in the Lincoln County Public Schools system, John began his journey as an entrepreneur, purchasing land and acquiring a mobile home community. A street leading to the community, aptly named "Poor Boy Lane," stood as a tribute to one of his cherished monikers.
In the 1960s, John relocated to Washington, DC. Fully embracing his new home, John was proud to call himself a true Washingtonian. A man of many talents, John worked tirelessly throughout his life. He wore numerous hats, excelling as a DJ, chef, vendor, and entrepreneur. His pioneering spirit led to the founding of Charles Home Improvement, Inc., a company he built from the ground up. Under John’s leadership, the business flourished, employing more than 15 individuals, including his own children. Through his venture, John instilled the values of hard work, life skills, and tradesmanship in his family. Over 45 years, he turned Charles Home Improvement into a sustainable, million-dollar enterprise, securing contracts with major clients such as Sunoco, a leader in the fuel industry. After retiring in 2002, John partnered with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, utilizing his home improvement expertise to assist families in maintaining their homes before finalizing reverse mortgages.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man of vibrant passions. An avid golfer, he spent countless Sundays honing his craft on the greens. He was a devoted fan of Washington football, enthusiastically supporting the team through its evolution from the Redskins to the Commanders. A collector at heart, John curated an impressive array
of coins, comic books, and golf balls. In his personal life, he was known for his love of cooking and his hand-on approach to fatherhood, teaching his children practical skills like home maintenance and financial responsibility.
On October 20, 2003, John married Valerie L. Charles, with whom he shared a deep and enduring bond. From their union came two children. Additionally, John was the proud father of ten children from previous relationships, whom he cherished dearly. He fully embraced his role as a father and mentor, equipping his children with the tools to thrive as responsible and productive individuals
John passed away peacefully at his home on November 18, 2024, at the age of 82. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and love. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Valerie L. Charles; his children, Robert Farley, Sheron Little-Bridges (Mitchell), John Charles, Jr., Frederick Charles (Jamilah), Michael Charles (Angie), Francina Charles Tinsley, Sabreina Munn (Shawn), Shannon Harrison, Jonní Charles, and Johnnette Charles; his siblings, Ida-Monetta Charles Duckworth, Shirley Ann Charles Ramseur, Delphine Charles Moore (Bernard), Myrna Jean Charles Gregory, Robert Lee Charles, Thelma Marie Charles Armstrong (Grant), and Arrice Charles (Angie); 36 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend James Charles, Sr. and Gussie Mae Johnson Charles; his children, Andre Brooks and Sherron David Charles; and his siblings, James Oscar Charles, Leroy Charles, Bernice Charles Friday, Thomas Sidney Charles, and Creola Charles. John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, and those whose lives he profoundly impacted.
