Ivy May Green was born December 17, 1934 to David Green and Vida Davis in Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies. She lived with her family in Jamaica for many years and loved being a part of the Jamaican culture. She received her education at Garlogy Public School in Clarendon, Jamaica.
In 1974, Ivy Green migrated to the United States. She lived in Alexandria, VA, then moved to Washington, DC, and later moved to Maryland where she resided. Many of her family members remained in Jamaica, others migrated to London and the United States.
Ivy Green worked as a housekeeper in Alexandria, VA. She then worked at Neiman-Marcus, in Washington, DC, as a Sales Representative for 10 years. She was a well-loved and devoted employee there. After leaving Neiman-Marcus, she worked as a health care provider for some time.
Ivy Green loved others and had a special love for children. There were many children that she provided day care services for and she loved being with them. She had many friends and she enjoyed communicating with them over the years. She was affectionately called “Aunt Ivy” by many people.
In 1980 she was invited to attend services at New Born Church of God & True Holiness. She heard the word and was baptized and soon after that she received the Holy Ghost. She loved attending church and was a member of the Caribbean Choir. She enjoyed singing songs such as, “Blessed Assurance,” “So Many Falling by The Wayside, Lord Help Me To Stand,” and “Telephone to Glory.” She has been a member of New Born Church, under the leadership of Bishop Woodrow Roach and now Bishop Allen Roach.
Ivy Green lived comfortably alone in her home, until the family found out she needed some assistance caring for herself. Her brother John Green came to live with her and helped to take good care of her. She enjoyed all the meals that he fixed for her because he was a very good chef. She had many wonderful doctors that took care of her and Dr. Neelam Shah was her primary care physician of 20 years. Dr. Neelam Shah and other doctors agreed that she should be on comfort care, and she agreed. This service was provided by the Capital Caring Health Hospice Company.
Ivy Green had four healthcare givers who worked for her: Greta Rawlins, Simone Castang, Goodness Isaac, and Consolatha Mandango. They worked with her tirelessly until the end of her life. Her family appreciates all the work that they have done. Her nieces Carmen Johnson and Cyslin Stewart also cared for her throughout her life. Her great-nieces Orretta Johnson, Marcia Johnson, and Lacey Mitchell also cared for her.
