September 9, 1928 – October 15, 2023
George A. Williams Sr., a beloved husband, father, dedicated public servant, and respected community member, passed away on October 15, 2023, at the Washington Hospital Center. Born on September 9, 1928 in Washington, D.C., to Elijah and Annie Williams, George’s life was marked by his achievements and devotion to service.
A graduate of Cardoza High School in 1946, George’s commitment and excellence were recognized being awarded the Certificate of Meritorious Achievement from the High School Cadet Corps. He went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II, participating in the occupation of Japan. After his military service he became employed with the State Department in 1948. He took a short break attending Bluefield State College in West Virginia. He was initiated into the Alpha Tau Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi in 1949, a life long honor that he cherished. After graduation in 1952 he married his college sweetheart the next year and began his career as a government employee in 1953
George dedicated his professional life to public service, working in Federal and City government for several decades.
In 1954 George began working in the social field, concentrating his efforts on helping people. He began working with the D.C. Department of Welfare as a Counselor during the early part of 1954. In 1958 he transferred to the Department of Health as a Social Worker, where he remained until 1966, at which time he began working for the Redevelopment Land Agency as a Family Relocation Counselor. In 1967 he returned to the Department of Health as a Supervisor. He later transferred back to the Department of Welfare as a Supervisor in the Medical Assistance Division.
George came to work with the Department of Corrections in 1969 as a Parole Officer and retired as Administrator of Community Correctional Center #2 in January 1986.
In conjunction with his lengthy Federal and District government service, George dedicated his time to numerous activities. He is 32nd Degree Mason; in the Lion's Club. George was a former Cub Scout Leader, Institution Representative for the Boy Scouts, President of Brookland Elementary School PTA, 1970 and 1972, Vice President of the Northeast Business and Professional Association, Chairman of the Advisory Council, Georgetown Health Plan; Member of the Board of Directors (2 years) Georgetown Community Health Plan, Kaiser Permanente; Task Force Chairman, establishing the ANC's for Ward 5; At-Large member of the
Advisory Council, Kaiser Permanente; and member of the Northeast Development Corporation. He was appointed by Mayor Barry to the State Health Coordination Council from 1978 to 1982, during which time the State Health Plan for the District of Columbia was completed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn A. Williams and is survived by his three sons, George Jr, Gregory (Cathy) and Gerald (Tangela). He also leaves six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
