GEORGE ANDREW THORNTON, JR (also known as “Buck” or Bucky”) was born on December 14, 1925 in Washington, D.C. to the late George Andrew, Sr. and Rosalie Thornton. Graduated from Veterans High School Center/Armstrong High School. One of two segregated manual training schools constructed for Washington, D.C. African American youth. His trade was in Brick masonry.
Enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 17, 1944; traveled many locations which he had the opportunity to see the performances of Earl Hines, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Honorable discharged with the rank of Seaman First Class and a notable World War II veteran. He was employed in the Federal Government for over 40 years at the Department of Defense; retiring as a Sergeant in security.
Married to the late Geraldine Thornton of 55 years and a devoted father to Kathryn Thornton, Cynthia Stannard (Renaldo), George Andrew Thornton, III (Crystal), Joyce Thornton and Christine Hoskins (Jeffery), and god-daughter, Tiffany Poku-Sarkodee. Survived by 11 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Siblings to the late Mary Lancaster and Frances Raymond and a host of other relatives.
George Andrew Thornton, Jr. is better known for his “GQ-style” as a young man up into his present days. His passion was in a variety of sports; a member of Armstrong baseball team, and an ex-boxer. He was also a devoted, highly motivated fan of the Baltimore Ravens.
He was very close to his family and well loved by many. His generosity in helping and giving to others extended into his life time.
