a son, George Andrew Gibson, was born in Richmond Texas to the late Jasper Lee Gibson and Thelma Townsend Gibson. George departed this life on February 13, 2020, at Medstar Southern Maryland Hospital.
George graduated in 1956 from A. W. Jackson High School in Rosenberg, Texas. While in High School he played basketball and was quarterback of the Eagles football team. He attended Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and obtained a B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering in 1960. He received his M.S. in Engineering Management from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. At an early age George attend Second Baptist Church in Richmond, Texas.
While at Prairie View, George was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and of the Barons Social Club. He was drafted and after graduating from the University, served two (2) years in the United States Army. George was the first African American Architectural Engineer with the Fort Worth Field Office of the United States Army Corp of Engineering, and worked as an Engineer with the Corps until his retirement in 1965 from their Washington District of Columbia Headquarters Office.
George was an active member of the PVAMU National Alumni Association (NAA) and served as President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the local Washington D.C. Alumni NAA Chapter. He was also a member of Black Ski, Inc., and enjoyed both national and international travel; he skied all over the world. George was an avid connoisseur of jazz. He attended Jazz Festivals throughout the United States and Europe. His favorite jazz artist was John Coltrane. George enjoyed collecting jazz music, African American art, and designing houses for clients and friends.
George is lovingly remembered by his wife Carolyn Smith Gibson; a daughter Yvonne Rynae Grant (Eric), Arlington, TX; a son Daryl Gibson (Dieshaa), Dallas, TX; two(2) grandsons; two granddaughters; one great grandchild; two brothers, L. J. Gibson (Cecile), North Las Vegas, NV, and Stanley Clyde Carr, Houston, TX; three (3) sisters, Thelma Ruth Mosbey (Leonard), Inglewood, CA, Ollie Ann Moore, San Marcos, TX, and Eleanor Joyce Carr, Austin, TX; and a brother-in-law Arlington Jones, Rosenberg, TX. His sister Shelley Jones, preceded him in death. He also leaves a best friend (‘like a brother’) George L. Wooley, and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.
