Embroy was born September 2, 1927 in Bertie, North Carolina to the late Edward Rufus Roscoe and Brittann Rawls Roscoe. She attended school in Ahoskie, North Carolina. At an early age she was baptized at Mill Branch Baptist Church in Aulander, North Carolina.
She later moved to Washington, DC where she met and married the late George Raymond Jarvis, Sr. to this union two sons were born: George R. Jarvis, Jr. and Larry Jarvis. In 1969, she married James Barksdale who preceded her in death May 1978.
She joined Mount Bethel Baptist Church in September 1944. She was a faithful member of Mount Bethel, serving on various Auxiliaries including the Senior Usher Board, Nurse’s Board, and Missionary Board. She also was a member of the Interdenominational Church Usher Association of DC (ICUA). She volunteered to help paint the Church and also donated copies of the Daily Bread booklet.
She was employed at the Department of State in the Food Service Department and was also on the Executive Board. Embroy also served as the Union Representative of the Food and Beverage Workers Union. Being very active and dedicated, she was recognized for her outstanding service and after many years of faithfulness she retired.
Embroy remained very active after retirement and was involved in many community related activities, receiving a number of awards including The President’s Volunteer Service Award. She attended the Model Cities Senior Wellness Center where she was active in field trips, bowling, and various other activities. Embroy bowled in the Senior Olympics, winning many trophies and ribbons. She also served on the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).
She was an avid walker - even as she grew older - and would walk long distances for her exercise.
She leaves to cherish her memories two sons: George R. Jarvis, Jr. (Maureen) and Larry Jarvis (Naomi); one sister Evon Kemmer; five grandchildren: Troy Jarvis, Monica Jarvis, Resha Jarvis-Garay (Marcos), Feleece Mitchell (Sean) and Larry Jarvis, Jr.; seven great-grandchildren: Tiara Cutchfield, Alec Mitchell, Joshua Mitchell, Trae’Sean Mitchell, Lisa Jarvis-Garay, Yasmin Jarvis-Garay and Natanael Jarvis-Garay. As well as host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Family that preceded her in death include three brothers and four sisters.
