Dr. Edward “Mickey” Harris, a distinguished figure in the community, passed away on October 18, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of service, artistic expression, and spiritual devotion. He was born on May 10, 1932, in Charlotte, NC, to the late Andrew Harris Sr. and Alberta Harris. As the second of five children, he grew up surrounded by love and support.
Edward Harris's pursuit of knowledge led him to attain a remarkable educational background. He earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and education from the esteemed Howard University. Additionally, he received a Bachelor of Bible Philosophy from the American Bible Institute, a Master of Arts in Adult Education from the University of the District of Columbia, and a Doctor of Humane Letters from Washington Saturday College, Howard University Campus.
Edward met and married Gladys Harris, and from their union they had two children, Anastasia, and Anthony Harris. Edward was a loving and dedicated father. He later remarried to Neta Marshall.
A dedicated public servant, Edward Harris, served as ANC Ward Representative for numerous years in Ward 7, particularly in the Deanwood Corridor. His passion for art blossomed early in life when he began studying under the tutelage of Madam Udiske at Howard University at the tender age of 12. His artistic talents shone brightly, with his works gracing the walls of the National Gallery of Arts in Washington, DC.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Harris held various roles, reflecting his deep commitment to his community. He served in the U.S. Army, where he attended the Brooks Army Medical Field Service School and went on to serve as a dedicated chaplain. He also pursued further education at the McCollough Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. Later, he served as a probation officer under the administration of Mayor Walter Washington. Notably, he assumed the role of Vice President at the Washington Saturday College at Howard University, where he played an instrumental role in guiding numerous individuals to attain their doctoral degrees in Theology.
Dr. Harris's spiritual journey was marked by his unwavering dedication to the United House of Prayer. From childhood, he was an active member, contributing significantly to the Marshall Heights congregation. He served as the Monday night elder and lent his musical talents by playing the piano for the choir. The choir's anthem, "We've Come This Far by Faith," became a testament to his steadfast belief.
When called to preach, he spoke eloquently, earning him the endearing nickname, "the big mouth preacher," bestowed upon him by Daddy Grace. Dr. Harris also generously shared his musical talents by providing piano lessons to a multitude of aspiring musicians, both young and old. Prior to assuming the role of Bishop/Daddy McCollough, he served as Elder McCollough's dedicated private secretary.
Dr. Harris's impact extended beyond his immediate community. He executed the conferral of an honorary doctorate to Bishop S.C. Madison, a testament to his recognition of outstanding contributions to the faith community.
Dr. Harris was preceded in death by his dear brother, Andrew Harris, Jr., and sister, Elizabeth Doretha Harvey. He is survived by his children, Anthony, and Anastasia Harris, as well as his devoted siblings, Willie Mae Black and David Marcel Harris. Additionally, he leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Edward Harris will be remembered not only for his outstanding achievements and contributions but also for the indelible mark he left on the hearts of all those fortunate enough to know him.
A visitation for Edward will be held Friday, November 3, 2023 at 10:00 AM at United House of Prayer for All People, 601 M St NW, Washington, DC 20001. A celebration of life will occur Friday, November 3, 2023 at 11:00 AM. A service of committal and interment will occur Friday, November 3, 2023 at 1:00 PM at National Harmony Memorial Park, 7101 Sheriff Rd, Hyattsville, MD 20785.
