She attended and graduated public school in Clarendon County, SC. Her
relationship with God began at an early age, attending both Union Hill and Mount Zion churches in Olanta, SC. That relationship with God continued into her young adult years, joining St. John’s Baptist Church, in 1950 after relocating to the District of Columbia.
In 1958, she received her Cosmetology license from the Hawaiian Beauty School in Washington, DC, and later attended the University of Kentucky in Louisville, Kentucky where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Cosmetology and pledged into the Delta Sigma Theta Greek sorority. She was a self-employed Cosmetologist for more than forty years and retired from the profession in 2001.
She opened her home to almost anyone who was down on their luck and needed a place to stay. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, caring for others, and most of all her passion for hair.
Betty took her last walk up the stairways to Heaven on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the Hospice of the Chesapeake in Waldorf, Maryland.
Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory one son: Darrick Woods (Tonya), two daughters: Lorraine Day-Hunt (Bruce) and Nadirah Aasim-Washington (Bernard, deceased); seven grandchildren: Crystal Johnson, Tineshia Johnson, Darrick Woods II, Bruce Hunt II, Kevin Woods, Gerald Day; twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Also, a host of other relatives and friends who were fortunate enough to be acquainted with the wonderful and considerate Betty Lou Wilson Day aka Mom aka Nana.
As she reaches the last step on the stairways to Heaven, her grandson Carl Day-Baker (preceded her death) will be there waiting to greet her with open arms and a loving heart.
