Grandma was one of my favorite people in the world. Sitting in the kitchen and watching murder mysteries, talking about books we had both read, smoking cigarettes after dinner. I have so many wonderful memories of and with her, and I’m so grateful for the time I got to spend with her. I know she’s watching me every day. I’ll love her forever.

They say that the best things come in the smallest of packages. Mrs. Petty was a small woman in stature but her heart was huge. Growing up, I lived across the street from her so I had a window’s view to see the kind of person she was. I remember as a little boy running around outside with my brother and Frankie. Roughhousing and playing around, they got cut so we ran to Mrs. Petty’s house so they could get patched up with a bandaid. I remember I wasn’t cut but to keep me included with the big boys, Mrs. Petty put a bandaid on me too. My family moved out of the neighborhood when I was in middle school so I didn’t see Mrs. Petty again till I was in college. I remember she came over to my parents’ house the same weekend I was visiting my parents and when she saw me she burst into tears because I grew up from the little boy she remembered into a man. I remembered thinking to myself that I never had anyone who I wasn’t blood related to, care about me so much. Throughout the years, we would check in on each other. I remember she was the first person in my life to talk about traveling to exodic destinations like Bermuda. She would go every year. She inspired me to travel. I had to step my travel game up to keep up with Mrs. Petty. I always made sure to stop by Mrs. Petty’s house to spend time with her and she was alway available to talk so it deeply saddens me that she is no longer here. Her impact was huge as she touched the lives of many. She will be greatly missed but her memory will live on in all of us. Rest in Paradise Ms. Petty! We’ll love you always.
