Marian passed away peacefully September 13, 2016. Marian was born to Joseph and Margaret Esser in Remsen, Iowa. During her early years she grew up with her two younger sisters Doris and Jean. Marian always talked about the fun summers swimming with friends to cool off because of the Midwest heat. Marian always loved to go fishing with her Dad who was an avid fisherman. As she grew up she attended some college at the University of Iowa. Marian also enjoyed outdoor activities such as golfing, swimming, and skiing. In the early 40’s Marian moved to Seattle, Washington with her family. She enjoyed her job at Rivkens Jewelry store and with extra money from her paycheck sometimes she would treat herself to a new 75 RPM record album that may have featured Bing Crosby or the Andrews sisters.
While in Seattle she met Vern Castle from Sioux City, Iowa. He was an officer in the Navy at the time. After Vern’s service in the Navy they married and started their life together in Yakima, Washington. Vern was a pharmacist and got his first pharmacy job there. While in Yakima, Washington they started their family.
After several years in Yakima, Washington, Vern and Marian moved to Bremerton, Washington. They purchased Peterson Drug Store on Kitsap Way and renamed it Castle Drug. Together they owned and operated the store for 45 years. Marian worked in the store and did most of the book keeping.
During those busy years they raised five children. Marian loved summertime boating vacations in the Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Marian also enjoyed short family road trips with a station wagon loaded with five children.
Marian was a great seamstress, she loved geraniums, especially red varietals. Marian was a great cook but always said how much she disliked cooking.
Later on when the family got older Marian and Vern enjoyed cruises and they both loved spending time with their grandchildren.
Marian was preceded in death by her husband Vern in 2007. She is survived by her son’s Jon Castle (Cathy), Jim Castle; and daughters, Joan Dofelmier (Frank), Margaret Miller (Don), and Claire Walden. She leaves eight grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
