Hideko Campagna

Hideko (Kuwahara) was born in Nagasaki Japan on May 25, 1932. She is an atomic bomb survivor. In high school Hideko was on the Japanese National Gymnastics team. She graduated from Nagasaki West Girls High School. She met Ronald Anthony Campagna who was serving in the US Navy stationed in Japan and they were married on September 18, 1955. Ronald stayed in the Navy until 1975. During Ron’s service, they lived many different places in the US, on Midway Island and were stationed in Japan multiple times including Ron’s last duty station which was in Yokosuka Japan. Upon retirement from the Navy, Ron and Hideko moved to Fairburn Georgia where they lived for 10 years before relocating to Silverdale in 1995 when Ron retired from his teaching job. They loved Washington for the mild weather, beautiful views and the Japanese culture that is here. Hideko loved Obon Dancing, doing Haiku, watching Sumo wrestling and just getting together with her many Japanese friends. In their retirement, Ron and Hideko loved traveling and were fortunate to be able to visit several foreign lands including Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Thailand, Russia, Germany, Austria, Spain and of course many trips to Japan.

Hideko was preceded in death by her parents, Jisaku and Kimi Kuwahara as well as 3 sisters Teruko, Sonoko and Aiko. Her greatest loss was when Ron died in 2017 after 63 years of marriage.

Hideko is survived by her son and daughter-in-law James and Donna Campagna, her grandson Garrett, his wife Rachel and their 3-year-old daughter Ryan Aria as well as her granddaughter Rachel and her husband Nathan Bernstein. In addition, Hideko has one surviving sister Sumiko.

A Celebration of Life for Hideko will be held at the Island Lake Community Center located at 1087 NW Island Lake Road, Poulsbo. WA at 11:30 am on Thursday, October 31st. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association.
