Floyd Edward Langton

DECEMBER 18, 1924-JUNE 8, 2018

Floyd Langton was born on December 18, 1924 in Tacoma Washington to Morris & Marjorie Langton. The family moved to Walla Walla, where Floyd grew up with his four brothers and two sisters. In school, he was active in both choir and band. Upon graduation, he immediately enlisted in the US Navy. Floyd served aboard the heavy cruiser USS Canberra (CA-70) in the Pacific. The Canberra participated in 18 major engagements in WWII, and was heavily damaged by a torpedo at one point. Floyd worked in the engine room and served in a 5 inch gun mount during engagements. After the war, Floyd joined the reserves, where he was active in the Seabees. In retirement, Floyd attended reunions of the USS Canberra crew.

After the war, Floyd’s sister Gertrude introduced him to Betty, who was working as a telephone operator in Walla Walla at the time. Floyd married Betty Ashby on June 20, 1948 in Walla Walla at the First Methodist Church, where he was active in choir. Floyd and Betty were about to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary at the time of his passing.

Floyd & Betty moved to Bremerton within a few months of the wedding, so that he could join the naval shipyard’s apprentice program. He worked in the pipe shop for several years before being promoted to the design department, where he worked until his retirement in 1979. He also worked for Art Anderson Engineering for several years following retirement.

Floyd was a lifelong fishing “nut” who fished for salmon and trout all over the northwest US and British Columbia. He took his family to LaPush and Freshwater Bay to camp and fish on several occasions, often joining Claude and Betty Spigler and their family.

In the late 1960’s Floyd and Betty bought a lot on the Tahuya River in Mason County. The entire family participated in clearing the land and building a cabin that Floyd designed. Claude and Betty Spigler bought the lot next door and built their cabin.

Floyd was heavily involved in barber shop singing, and was a member of several quartets over the years. Floyd was active in choir at Bremerton’s First Methodist Church, and provided many solo performances over the years. He also loved woodworking, and completed many furniture restorations and whirligigs in his back yard shop.

Floyd is survived by wife Betty, son Steve and his wife Annette of Rogers, Arkansas, son Doug of Seattle and partner Sue Plahn, son Paul and his wife Melody of Nampa, Idaho, and numerous grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Del, Marvin, Al, and Stan, and sisters Arlene and Gertrude.

His family has enjoyed his cheerful, even-tempered, and generous personality over many years. He will be greatly missed.

Services will be held at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
