Born in Hillsborough County on February 14, 1951, he leaves behind a lifetime legacy of public service starting in 1970 as a member of the Florida National Guard and in 1972 joining the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Eventually retiring in March 2007, as a Major and District Commander of District IV, encompassing Southern Hillsborough County. He was a friend to everyone and a mentor to scores of deputies, also known as “Jerry’s kids”. He began his career working in the jail and then was transferred to patrol. He worked in every division of the Sheriff's Office, but always having a soft spot for the Patrol Division. Jerry always said, "That's where the real police work takes place".
He was a graduate of the Class of 1969 Brandon High School and was justly proud of being a Hillsborough County Native, along with being able to serve the citizens of his home county.
Jerry was a member of the Cowee Baptist Church in North Carolina. Jerry accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior in 1998. His love of the Lord was evident in the love he showed to others. His favorite bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 “ For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Jerry’s hope was in Jesus and his future was fulfilled January 19th when he joined his sweet Jesus in Heaven.
He loved nature and being in the woods and was an avid hunter who left behind numerous hunting buddies in Estill, S.C.
Jerry found the love of his life, Alice, and for 33 years they faced life and a love of the Lord together.
We, his family and friends, watched as he fought a valiant battle against the insipid disease of cancer, with faith and dignity to befit any man. Though he lost that battle, he will continue to live in the hearts of his family and friends.
Jerry leaves behind his loving wife Alice, brother Steve (Becky), daughter Stacy and grandson Caleb, son Alex.
