I am very saddened that the world has lost a wonderful human being, however God always has a plan that we must trust and believe in. I was lucky enough to have been able to meet such a great man, and was able to be involved in his life, as he welcomed me with open arms. My condolences go to the entire family. He may no longer be here in person, however he will always be remembered and spoken of in the highest regards!

James was always welcoming and he treated me like a son.  He was a generous man that would give the shirt off his back if someone were in need. He was also hardworking and intelligent with a great sense of humor.  He was indeed all the great things that people have written about him.  The impact he had on the lives of family and friends will be felt forever.  He will be greatly missed.

Oh how I miss you already...Words cannot express enough of how kind, funny, and thoughtful you are. I will forever remember the numerous nicknames, chuckles, and great stories you had to share. I am so grateful that you were able to apart of my life and my children's lives. They ask about you often and it is so difficult to try to put into words and for them to understand how you had to go live with "baby Jesus". I have many memories of you in my life and that brings me great comfort. One in particular, I was in high school and just started a job at a local restaurant. My tire had gone flat and I called you for an SOS. I had to be at work later that day,  you came by took my tire off the car, got it patched, brought it back, and put it back on all before I had to be at work. You truly would go out of your way to help and would do anything for your family. We could always count on you and Gramma to be present at a school event, sports game, or dance competition. You are such a wonderful person. Heaven has truly gained an angel and I hope Granny is making you a biscuit. I love you so so much!!

Papa I love you so much and will miss you like crazy! I’ll always have a special place in my heart for you. I know you will always be with us & watching over us. I will never forget all the great times we shared together & I will cherish those precious  memories forever. I will always make sure to share all of my memories with Michael too. I am so happy you got to meet him & hold him.  Your face would light up each time you saw him & I hope he grows up to be just like you.  You are the best Papa a girl could ever have! I looked up to you in so many ways. You were the sweetest, kindest and the most intelligent hardworking man I know. I will always miss seeing your sweet smile & hearing you say…  “ Come give me some sugar” when us kiddos would come over to see you and Gramma.  I will miss sitting outside on the car port with you. I will also miss sitting at the grove house talking with you, & you sharing old stories with me. I know your at peace now & in Heaven with Granny, Granddad & Uncle Rob so that makes me feel better. Papa, you were and are an amazing man. I'm forever grateful that I got to know and love you for 31 years of my life. I will be carrying all the memories as well as times where you often tried (successfully) to put a smile on my face. Thank you for always being there and being a presence in my life. Your support, generosity, and humility are traits I will never forget. Rest knowing you were a devoted husband and father, I felt the love you had for gramma, mom, aunt melinda, and uncle darryl. You are forever in my heart...I love you. 

Dad, I will love you and miss you always!  Thank you for being the very best father and grandfather that I could have asked for.  I appreciate all the love and support you have given me and my family.  All of our memories of you will be held close within our hearts.  You are irreplaceable!!

In times of such great loss, no words can begin to mind the hearts of loved ones.  I will greatly miss James, and will never forget that special twinkle in his eye and his quick wit.  He was a man I could always look up to.  My deepest condolence to Mrs.White, Kelly, Melinda, and Darryl.  My love and prayers are with you all.

Those who are lucky enough to have known James know how blessed they are to have had him as part of their lives. I for one am truly blessed as he gave me one of his greatest treasures of all, his beautiful daughter, Melinda.   Early on,one of the things that attracted me most about her was how much she loved and adored her family, particularly her parents.   She held her dad on a pedestal and I soon realized why.   He was such a good son to his parents and shining star to his wife and children.  He was not only a good provider, he truly wanted his children to be happy and successful. I knew early on after I met him that I wanted to be like him, to be as successful as he was raising his family.  I was fortunate to become part of his family and he always treated me like a son.  He was always there for us and I knew he would always be there to pick us up should we happen to fall.  That sense of security gave us the courage to persevere and chase our dreams.  He would always meet you with encouragement when he knew you were struggling and would be the first to congratulate you and share in your successes.  Through it all, he would always inject his sense of humor.  I guess you could say it was his trademark.  It was his way of keeping us grounded.  If you happened to get too big for your britches, he would always be there with a “dig” to keep you grounded.  I am happy that his legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren and that I get to experience it first hand when I see his traits living on through them.  One of his last bits of wisdom that he shared that I would like to close with was that “life is short.   Do as much as you can while you still can.”   In other words, make some memories.  Sometimes we don’t realize how precious they are until they are gone.  

Dear Papa, 
I want to start this off by saying that I feel incredibly blessed to have had you as my grandfather.  Living close to you growing up, I was able to create so many memories with you that I will cherish forever.  Some of my fondest recollections were when I was a young girl and we would have mass sleepovers at your house with all the grandchildren.  You always welcomed all of us into your home with open arms.  As a girl I also loved dolls, and anytime I got a new doll you loved to name each and every one of them, whether it be “Teeny Weenie Tina” or “Pigity Poo” (even though, at the time, I didn’t care for those names too much). You always found a way to connect and form a bond with not only your grandchildren, but with anyone you’d meet.  I am going to miss asking you what you’ve been up to and you responding, “ohh just piddling around”.  Or coming over and seeing you outside sitting on your front porch, asking you about your GTOs, or hearing stories about how you and Gramma used to love going swing dancing.  You and Gramma have been present for every important part of my life so far, from Miss Judys dance recitals to nursing school graduation.  However, even though you will no longer be present in the flesh, I know you will continue to be there for all of our important moments, watching over all of us with Granny, Grandad, Uncle Rob, Donna Sue and all our other loved ones who have passed on. 
I love you so much and will miss you every day. Until we meet again, Erin 


Papa was of the greatest people I have ever known.  He was loving, genuine, smart , and had the best sense of humor.  He loved his whole family so much and treated us all the same.  What I would give to be able to share a laugh, life talk, or a dance with him again. I will cherish my relationship with him forever and am comforted in knowing I will see him again one day. I hope Granny is whipping you up a southern feast to welcome you, Papa! I love you. 

Papa… such a kind, loving, generous person, who exuded warmth and a wonderful sense of humor. He would literally welcome a stranger into his home, and make her feel like a part of his family. A  gem of a person, forever in Jesus’s company. Love you Papa!


Papa was a simple man who knew what he liked and stuck with it. He’d be happier eating a steakburger from Steak n’ Shake than just about anything else. Every year on his birthday you could expect Gramma to make him the same fudge-striped cake. He never got tired of listening to Jerry Lee, Hank Williams, and Roy Orbison, and during his free time you’d be hard-pressed to find him anywhere but in his garage or on the couch watching a history channel documentary. Yet, during my teenage and early college years, when my own interests and goals were rapidly evolving, Papa always found a way to meet me where I was. He and Gramma attended my piano recitals and academic presentations. He was inquisitive about my work and hobbies no matter how far outside his comfort zone, and he made it a point to remember my answers to his questions to the best of his ability. These are just a few of the many ways Papa showed me that he loved me. I will miss him always. 

Many of my earliest memories come from time spent at Gramma and Papa’s house after school and on weekends. Austin and I would have certainly lived there if we could’ve, thanks in no small part to the endless snacks and cable TV that we came to associate with our visits. Gramma expertly filled the role of caretaker—our needs were never unnoticed under her watchful eye, and, while she was always sweet, she could be stern when it was necessary. Papa, on the other hand, didn’t have a serious bone in his body. He was a total goofball with his grandchildren, for each of whom he had a list of go-to nicknames, silly phrases, and favorite jokes, none of which he’d ever hesitated to repeat. Perhaps my earliest ever memory is of rocking up and down on Papa’s knee to the rhythm of one of his signature nonsense phrases, which, if I had to spell it out, would go something like shoogedy-boom-badee-badoom-bam-boom. Papa also coined my family nickname “Ol’ Yoge”, which he’d frequently shorten to just “Yoge” or “Yogi”. His favorite thing to joke about with me was that I actually did not want the PB&J I was greedily scarfing down between episodes of Spongebob. “Yoge, you don’t want that peanut butter and jelly,” he would say with a mischievous grin, dragging out the words peanut butter and jelly for emphasis. My part of the joke was to eat faster. 


Papa, I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done for our family. You are one of the most incredible men I have ever met, you are an amazing grandfather, and I loved every moment we spent together. I will miss all the jokes you told, the laughs we shared, and the happiness you brought me every time I saw you. You are a hero of mine, and I am so blessed to have been given the greatest grandfather a grandson could ask for. I love you, Papa. 

My Papa was such an incredible man with the kindest heart. He always made me laugh, and his smile never failed to light up a room. I will cherish every single moment that I had with him for the rest of my life. Being his granddaughter was the greatest gift. I love him so much and  miss him dearly. 

Papa, you always were there for others when they needed you - never hesitating to support your family and those you loved in any circumstances. I will always remember your kindness, humility, and ability to brighten the spirits of those around you. We will all miss you deeply but you will always remain in our hearts. 

My grandpa was an amazing person, he was always so sweet, kind and thoughtful. I will always cherish the memories, and I am so thankful for all the moments I got to spend with him. I know he is in a better place now, where he can be at peace. I will never forget him or the kindness he brought into the world. 

Thank you for being the best father anyone could ask for. You have always been there for me  and my family. I will cherish and take the memories, experiences and life lessons with me for the rest of my life.  I already miss sitting with you outside and sharing conversation and laughs. I will miss being able to talk to you when I need support or advice.  You are irreplaceable. I love you Dad.

I love you Dad. I will miss your smile, your great sense of humor, your guidance and support. You will always be in my heart and I will forever miss you.
