Mayer, Florence A., 97, of Brandon, FL entered peacefully into eternal life on August 29, 2020. Florence was born to Peter and Angelina (Cimerella) Mercuro on June 14, 1923 in Newark, New Jersey. As a child, she loved going to school and running track. In 1943, she began her fifty-one year marriage to her beloved husband, George Mayer, who served in the United States Navy. Florence and her family moved to Brandon, FL in 1969 and joined Nativity Catholic Church. She was a founder of the Guardian Angels Circle at Nativity, which provided childcare during Masses. An active volunteer, Florence also assisted in the church office, the faith formation office, and was a member of the Nativity Women’s Guild. For sixteen years, she worked as a preschool teacher at Maddux Private School in Valrico, where she would compose the school’s annual music program. Florence fondly remembered all of her students every time she met one, sometimes decades after they had been in her class. She later volunteered as a tutor at Kingswood Elementary for many years, and loved helping students learn to read. An avid fan of the Tampa Bay Rays, Florence watched nearly every game the team played. Above all, she treasured time with her family and was a devoted mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Florence is predeceased by her husband, George Mayer and her sister, Emily Mannino. She is survived by her brother, George Mercuro, as well as her children, Bernadette Denison (Michael Denison) and Kathleen Sheridan (Thomas Sheridan). She was a proud grandmother of seven and adored spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Florence loved her life and lived every day with faith and purpose, celebrating often with her family and friends. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. at Nativity Catholic Church, 705 E. Brandon Blvd. Flowers are welcome or Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org
