Alex Humphrey Jr.

HUMPHREY Jr., Alex, 87, of Brandon, Fla., passed away peacefully following a brief illness Monday, June 6, 2011, surrounding by family and holding hands with his sweetheart of more than 70 years. Bon on June 10, 1923 in Lubbock, Texas, the family eventually moved to Mission, Texas where he met and married his school sweetheart, and love of his life Ruth Roberts. He is survived by Ruth; sons, Alex III (Carolyn) of Wylie, Texas, and Phil (Aloha) of Brandon, Fla.; four grandchildren, Marcy (Mike) Leonard, Cheryl (Randy) Rios, Karis (Evan) Johns, and Seth Humphrey; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his only brother, Virgil Humphrey, and grandson, Shannon Humphrey. Alex served as an Army Air Corp officer during WWII as a navigator. Shortly after his military career, serving Christ and sharing the Gospel became his lifelong passion. He was minister for the Church of Christ, preaching in Wyoming, Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Arkansas and Florida. Alex and Ruth were involved in numerous mission campaigns which took them to Switzerland, Malaysia, Africa, Italy and Holland. Having received his Masters and STB degrees from Abilene Christian University in Biblical Studies, teaching college Bible throughout the Midwest was his true joy for many years. Students around the world remember their “Alex Humphrey Bible Class” with much fondness and great respect. He was a Bible Professor for Abilene Christian University, Texas, York College in Nebraska where he taught and also served as Head of the Bible Department, he also taught at Ohio Valley College, W. Va., and Oklahoma Christian University, Okla. Alex relished golfing with one of his sons and fishing with the other. Nothing thrilled him more than a “nice shot” or bringing home a “fresh mess of fish” that Ruth would lovingly fry up to perfection. He loved life and loved spending time with family and friends. More than anything, he loved God and His Word. If Alex were writing this he would want it said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at the Bay Area Church of Christ, 3905 Orange Street, Mango, FL 33550. Visitation will be 6-7 p.m., with service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made in his honor to the Bible Department at either to Oklahoma Christian University, Edmund, OK or York College, York, NE.
