I was so sorry to hear of Mr Hendren’s passing. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends. 
I worked with Joe at Ford Motor Company. He sort of took me under his wing to show me the ropes of the Export department. We had so many great conversations. Stories of back home, work stories and mostly family. He loved his family so much. 
I loved and respected Mr Hendren so much. Thank heavens for memories. 
Keeping all of his family in my thoughts.

My Brother, Joe

As I said Joe was not big, but he had a reputation for being a “hard man” and not one to fight with. He once told me that if I was faced with a number of people who were threatening me, I should pick the biggest one and thump him. He said if he went down I was ok, if he didn’t go down I was done for, but I would have been hammered anyway. In due course I was faced with crowd of 5 blokes who were threatening me. After a period of unsuccessful negotiations I picked the biggest one and thumped him. He went down and I stepped in for the kill. BUT he got back up and he and his friends formed a semicircle and moved in threateningly towards me. My thoughts turned to Joe. What do you do now? I thought. I quickly made up my mind, I turned and ran. In the time it took for them to realise what was happening I was well away. So Joe taught me to fight! Or did he? 

When I got my provisional driving licence for the car, Joe told me he would teach me to drive. We got into the car which was parked outside the house. He threw me the keys and said “drive”. So I did. After we had travelled about 200 yards we reached a junction were I got stuck. We were approached by a policeman who thought that I looked too young to be driving and Joe looked too young to be teaching me. However our paperwork was in order and the policeman stood in the middle of the main road and stopped the traffic in both directions so that I could get out. After about three attempts I managed to get moving. Joe just laughed. So Joe taught me to drive; or did he? 
Growing up in the back streets of Belfast was not always easy. But we had fun and I have fond memories of things we done. I will not forget him and Joe will always be my Big Brother. Robert  



My Brother, Joe. 

Joe was the eldest in our family of six, three boys and three girls. I was 4th in line, 8 years Joe’s junior. But Joe, who was not tall, was my Big Brother. Joe was a real character with a great sense of humour. On one occasion when our uncle was locked out of his upstairs apartment, Joe worked out that if they each took my arm and a leg they could throw me up and I could grab on to the balcony and open the door. I was all for it! 

Joe taught me a lot of things. When he was having a crafty smoke at the back of the house, he would give me his cigarette to hold for a couple of minutes while he did something else. I, of course would sneak a few puffs. But one day I got the hold of three packets of cigarettes and with my cousin we smoked all of them, one after the other. I was sick for about 3 days and never smoked again. So Joe taught me to smoke; or did he?  …..
