Beloved wife of the late Irwin Caston for over 55 wonderful years.Beloved mother of Belinda Chauhan (Yogin) and Steven (Candy). Cherished Nanny to Serena, Aaron and David. She was born on September 2, 1935, in Ernakulam, Kerala, India to the late William and Irene Scolt. She will be missed by family and friends.
“Berna”was a precocious and fun-loving child. There were many youthful hijinks and exploits in the company of her sisters (Shirley, Nita and Maybearne). Those were her most cherished memories.
She moved to England with Irwin’s family and the two married there. Bernadette learned how to cook and soon had to adjust to motherhood. She grappled with the loneliness of being so far away from her own parents and sisters.
Soon, the young couple purchased their first modest home. They enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and flowers. She developed her prowess in the kitchen and soon became known for her “tasty hands”.
Adventure and opportunity called, in 1974 the family moved to Canada. It was a time of anxious exhilaration. The young couple worked together to navigate the new huge world of North America. There was a lot of learning, many missteps, new friends and decisions to be made.
Years and many moves later the family ended up in a home in the “M” section of Bramalea where they lived happily for many years.
Bernadette enjoyed being part of the raising her grandchildren, spoiling her dog Duke (and missing him terribly when he passed). She attended church at the local parish which was a short walk from the house. Her greatest joys were always cooking and family.
A visitation for Bernadette will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 10am-11am at Andrews Community Funeral Centre - Bramalea Chapel, 8190 Dixie Road, Brampton, ON. A funeral service will take place in the Chapel of the funeral home at 11am, following the visitation. Private cremation.
