Born in Reading, PA, she was the daughter of Ellsworth and Mary Alice (Layman) Handrich of Fairview, Michigan. After graduating from Fairview High School in Michigan, she studied business at Hesston College in Kansas where she received her associate’s degree.
After moving to Goshen, Indiana she began working as a bookkeeper for various people and local businesses including S&D Wood Products, Travel Tender, and Goshen College. Then, in the Bally Pennsylvania area she was a bank teller, a pastry baker at Yingling Restaurant, and a bookkeeper for Heritage Family Restaurant in Harleysville. She retired after 20 years with the office of the William Floyd Insurance Agency in Boyertown, PA.
An active member of Bally Mennonite Church since 1981, she participated in a quilting group with the church, sharing her talent with its members. Not only did she quilt, Sandra was also an avid crocheter and knitter creating intricate and extraordinary pieces. As a child, she rode horses and her love of them extended into adulthood. A “Food Artist”, she created wonderful dishes to share with her friends and family. Her skill and care in the culinary arts was abundantly evident in her pie baking. She remembered each person's favorite pie and would lovingly bake it for them. Her shoo fly pie was the favorite of her husband and daughters.
Sandra was a traveler, not a tourist. Embracing and immersing herself in every culture she met, she was a curious traveler, excited to learn of the people and places she visited. She wanted to know all about the lives of people she met along the way and asked lots of questions to learn their stories. She and her husband enjoyed spending time in Michigan, where she grew up. They made several lengthy trips across the U.S. with a camper, exploring along the way. She especially loved the beach, her favorite being Cape May, NJ. They also made several trips to Europe, visiting family in Holland as well as exploring across Europe.
Sandra had many likes, interests, and talents, but she was most known for her caring love of family and friends which she generously shared.
In June of 1964, Sandra married Roy Yoder of Bally, PA with whom she spent 55 long and happy years. Roy was her husband, traveling companion, and best friend that she cared for deeply. Sandra is survived by her husband; two daughters, Tonya Yoder of Lummi Island, WA, and Dione McDonald of Davidson, NC, wife of Marshall; two grandchildren, Madeline and Marissa McDonald; two sisters, Sharyn Smith of Fairview, MI, wife of Marple, and Sally Dalmeijer of Petten, Netherlands, wife of Kees; and two brothers, Fred Handrich of Fairview, MI, husband of Gloria, and George Handrich of Hawthorne, CA, husband of Debbie.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 16th, 2020 at the Bally Mennonite Church, 1481 Route 100, Bally, PA 19503 at 4pm. Visitation will be held prior from 2:45-3:45pm, and guests are invited to a time of food and fellowship following the service. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
