Thomas (Tom) William Nicholas of Bowie, Maryland, age 66, joined his Lord and Savior on Monday, November 15, 2021, passing away peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones. Tom was born in the Bronx, New York and was raised in Montgomery and Chester Counties of Pennsylvania. Tom was a graduate of Great Valley High School in Malvern, The University of Maryland, and Central Michigan University. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Theodore James Nicholas of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and his mother, Alice Holly Nicholas of Coatesville, Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, (Jennie) Ellen Nicholas of Bowie, Maryland, sister Annemarie Nicholas (Jim McIlhenney) of St. John’s, Florida, brother-in-law, Terry Manker (Sherry) of Columbia, Illinois, sisters-in-law, Diane (Steve) Hannum of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Sharon (Carol) Lee of Buda, Texas, nieces Elizabeth and Elaine Elder of West Chester, Pennsylvania, several nieces and nephews-in-law, cousins, friends, and numerous feline companions.
Tom enlisted in the US Air Force where he served for over 12 years with the highlight working in Special Missions on-board Air Force Two during the Carter/Mondale and Reagan/Bush administrations. After receiving an honorable discharge, Tom worked as a Social Studies teacher at Gwynn Park High School in Prince George’s County, Maryland for more than 10 years where he was a class sponsor and mentored innumerable students many with whom he maintained life-long relationships.
Tom was extremely well liked by anyone who met him due to his great sense of humor, outgoing personality, and sensitivity to humanity and animals. Tom was adept at connecting with people and he embodied service to his family, neighbors, friends, and his country. Tom was a true patriot and warrior who believed in hard work and self-determination.
Visitation will be at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Rd. Bowie, Maryland 20715 on Friday, November 26, 2021, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. A church service will be at SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Rd., Annapolis, Maryland. Saturday, November 27, 2021, at 10:00am. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
