Nancy was born in the small town of Whitten, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Leona Agnew. She had one older brother, George Alan Agnew. Her father died in 1935, and her mother bought a small restaurant where Nancy and Alan helped. When Alan graduated from high school and went into the Navy, Nancy and her mother moved to Washington, D.C. where Leona went to work for the Census Bureau. In 1943 when the census was completed, they moved back to Iowa where Nancy graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. After Nancy graduated, she and her mother moved back to D.C. Nancy attended Wilson Teacher’s College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. After graduation, Nancy moved to California where her mother and brother were living and taught 4th grade in Crockett, California. Later, Nancy and her mother moved back to D.C. and Nancy taught at Hine Junior High School.
In 1952, Nancy met Paul Thoman. They married in 1953 and moved to Temple Hills, MD in 1954 where they raised three sons, Bruce, Timothy, and Eric. During this time, Nancy was a stay-at-home mom. The family attended Corkran Memorial United Methodist Church where Nancy was a very active member.
In1975, Nancy became a Home and Hospital Teacher for Prince George’s County. She was one of the founders of the PG County Home and Hospital Teachers Association and also the Home and Hospital Teachers Association of Maryland, serving as president for two years. She taught for 28 years.
Nancy was a member of Temple Hills Homemakers for over 40 years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, bird watching and traveling with Paul.
Nancy was loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her sons Bruce Edward, (Brenda), Timothy Alan (Jane), Eric Albert, her grandchildren Melissa, Rebecca, and Ian, her great grandchildren, Elijah and Harvey, her niece Jane, and her sister-in-law, Ruth.
On December 2nd, Nancy will be interred with Paul at the Cheltenham Veteran’s Cemetery Columbarium in a private ceremony.
A memorial gathering will be held on December 7th at St. Matthews Methodist Church located at 14900 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715. Family will begin greeting guests at 1:30 followed by a brief remembrance at 2:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in Nancy’s name to your favorite charity.
