Jerry was born in Boston on December 27, 1928 to the late James and Margaret ( O'Connor ) McCarthy. James and Margaret had lived in the same town, Bantry Bay, County Cork in Ireland , but did not know each other until they met in America, married and began their Family in Charlestown, MA. Jerry was the first of five Children.
Jerry grew up in Charlestown and graduated from the High School of Commerce in Boston and continued his education and graduated from The Bentley School of Accounting in 1949.
Soon after graduating from College, Jerry served his Country in the US Army in the Armored Infantry Division, training at Fort Hood, Texas.
After his military service Jerry met Shirley R. (Rackham) who had recently arrived from the UK. They married and had three children, Stephen, Geoffrey and Kevin, moved out to the suburbs in Norwood and lived there for a short time.
Jerry's professional career spanned 36 years at Western Electric as an Accountant and was known to always be impeccably dressed and groomed. He spent many hours in the gym working on his boxing prowess, a common activity amongst the young men at the time. He also enjoyed participating in many other popular sports . Always an Athlete.
After retirement he pursued many diverse interests such as , hunting, fishing and outdoor survival and held a deep respect for proper use and respect for firearms and enjoyed training on the range. One his impressive bucket list experiences was to jump from a perfectly good airplane! He made multiple jumps and was extremely proud of this accomplishment. Also as an avid runner his whole life, at age 55 began training for marathon races. He completed 13 marathons. Six Boston Marathons , two Cape Cod , Montreal , Dublin ,Ireland , Marine Corp. Marathon, Providence RI. ( 3 hrs. 26 min. ) and others , all completed in under 4 hrs.
Jerry's athleticism also provided him a great desire to pursue Ballroom dancing where he met his close friend and companion Florence Collins. Together they moved to Estero Fl. and enjoyed 20 great years of Ballroom, Line , Square and Tap dancing all around SW Florida where they made many great Friends. They loved the beach, reading and spending time with their children and grandchildren visiting in the Sunshine State. Unfortunately, in 2017 Hurricane Irma forced these two back to Massachusetts and the loving assistance of their Children. There is no doubt that Jerry and Flo will do some dancing in Heavens Ballroom.
Jerry is survived by his youngest brother Francis X. McCarthy of Washington State, his Children ,Stephen J. McCarthy of Pocasset, Geoffrey D. McCarthy and Kevin J. McCarthy both of Plymouth, his eight grandchildren , eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jerry was predeceased by his brother Jack and his wife Patricia, brother James and his wife Rose, Sister Marge and her husband Gene Prior. Also, tragically predeceased are his beautiful Grandsons Patric J.J. McCarthy, ( 2003 ) and Adam J. McCarthy ( 2018)
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 27th at 12pm at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne Ma with a visitation taking place prior from 10am to 12pm. Burial will follow at the South Monument Cemetery in Pocasset.
