She was born Frances Mildred Nachtigal in New York, the daughter of Louis and Helen (Kushar) Nachtigal.
She grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Saint Mary’s School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse.
Frances served her country in the United States Army in the Nurses Corp. She attained the rank of Second Lieutenant before being honorably discharged in 1946.
On August 9, 1947 she was united in marriage to Joseph Valentine Zlogar of Steelton, PA. To this union four children were born, Diane, Michael, Joseph Jr and Regina.
After relocating to Buzzards Bay, Frances worked as a registered nurse at the Tobey Hospital and Cape Cod Nursing Home until being appointed as School Nurse for the Bourne Public School system. After her retirement she became an avid quilter and bingo player.
The Fall River Archdiocese presented Frances with the Marion Medal to honor her years of service to St. Margaret’s parish. She was a Eucharistic minister, a founding member of the St. Margaret & St. Mary’s Women’s Guild and a choir member. She performed countless hours of volunteer work including teaching CCD classes, caring for altar linens and preparing the church for holidays and special occasions.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph, her parents, siblings; Louis, William and Joseph Nachtigal, and by a grandchild, Thomas Enright.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Diane Nafis and her husband Donald of Laurel Springs, NJ, Michael Zlogar and his wife Susan of Amherst, Joseph Zlogar Jr. and his wife Nadene of Kingston and Regina Souza and her husband Robert of Bridgewater. She is also survived by ten loving grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and three nieces and four nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 22, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Bourne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 23, at 11:00 AM, at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Buzzards Bay. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
The family asks that memorial gifts be made in Frances’ name to St Frances Bread Line or the Federation Of The Blind.
