Born to the late Lilian and Chester “Chet” Bromley on April 12, 1947, in Attleboro, MA, Cheryl graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1965. She earned a BA in English in 1969 and subsequently an MA in Teaching English in 1975, both from Bridgewater State University.
A high school English teacher for greater than 35 years, including tenures at Easton, Sandwich, and Plymouth public schools, Cheryl was the quintessential educator. Her passion for teaching and love of creative writing was evident throughout her career, which led her to consult for both the Poetry Alive! summer residency in Asheville, NC, as well as Cape Cod’s Language Arts Consortium of Educators.
While teaching at Sandwich High School, Cheryl was awarded the prestigious Lucretia Crocker teaching fellowship and served as president of the Massachusetts Council of Teachers of English. After retiring from teaching full time, she worked as an educational consultant with Teachers 21 and Seaside Educational Consultants. She was well known for her innovative educational practices, her stimulating workshops, and her endless enthusiasm for supporting teachers and students in their learning environments.
Cheryl was an active member of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish in Buzzard’s Bay and regularly attended mass at St. Mary Star of the Sea in Onset. She was an avid traveler, visiting Europe with her “gaggle” of close friends, attending writing workshops across the country, and more recently boating with her husband.
Cheryl is survived by her loving husband of five years, Robert Karp, and her sister, Karen Bromley Rood, and her husband, Gregory Rood, of Centerville, MA. She is also survived by six nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband Warren Jones (d. 2002), her brother Douglas Bromley (d. 1980), and her sister Mary Gibbs (d. 2020).
A visitation for Cheryl will be held Thursday, June 15, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd, Bourne, MA 02532. A memorial mass will occur Friday, June 16, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, 141 Main St., Buzzards Bay, MA, followed immediately by a celebration of Cheryl’s life at Mezza Luna Restaurant in Buzzards Bay.
Cheryl’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Laubach from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Dr. Liu and his staff at Cape Cod Hospital. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
