On April 23, 2022, Judith "Hoodie" Maureen (Sayre) Lawrence passed away in the loving company of her children Ronald Jay Lawrence, Jr. and his wife Marilyn Lawrence, Susan Maureen Schafer and her fiancé Jeff Haugen, and Anita Kay Oliver and her husband Michael Oliver. She is also survived by her Sister Nancy (Sayre) Koch Kolb and her husband Don Kolb of Phoenix, AZ, her sister Charlsie (Sayre) Pafford and her husband Robert J Pafford III of Roanoke, VA. along with 9 grandchildren (Staci, Jenna, Connor, Tiana, Cory, Terra, Ashley, Cassandra, Jacob), 7 great-grandchildren (Barrett, Alexia, Walker, Dean, Riley, Oliver, Atticus), and many, many friends. Gone before her are her father, Charles Lewis Sayre and mother Berenice Louise (Shay) Sayre of Boulder, CO, her husband Ronald Jay Lawrence, Sr. of Boulder, CO, and her brother in law Gary D Koch, Sr.
Judy was born on April 28, 1940 in Boulder, CO where she lived her entire life. She was a quiet girl who liked to be outdoors (no television at their house until 1954!) with her friends and sisters, playing jacks and other childhood games of the time. She said that she was more social in smaller groups than in large ones. With her sisters, she chose to align with the "winning sister" in any disagreements between them. Every Saturday during this time, her Grandfather Henry would take them to visit his late wife Lulu at the cemetery and if the kids were good, they would go to Alba Dairy for ice cream. Judy graduated from Boulder High School in 1958, where she was involved in the pep club where she cheered for football and basketball games. Judy completed some college classes at the University of Colorado in Boulder. She was married to Ronald Jay Lawrence on April 4th, 1964. The ceremony was the first wedding held at the then newly remodeled Sacred Heart of Jesus church.
In 1977, her husband Ronald Jay Lawrence, Sr. passed away. This left her raising Ron, Susan, and Anita on her own as a single mother. It helped her a lot to have family and friends in Boulder to help support her in this, and she taught her children to be independent, kind, self-sufficient people. She balanced a career at the Credit union and supported her family with seeming ease. She would sometimes jokingly say to the kids “Well, none of you are in jail so I must have done something right!”. She was a great mother and was very supportive and patient as they navigated their way through school, social lives, and activities.
Judy worked throughout her adult years, at JCPenney, Security Bank, and for her father Charles at Coughlin and Company as a receptionist before she settled at the CU Credit union where she held several positions throughout her 23 year career there, retiring at age 62.
Judy also had her own activities to juggle. Judy was initiated into P.E.O., Chapter BY, Boulder, CO in 1963. She had a dimit into Chapter EY, Boulder, CO in 1978, where she remained a loving sister until she passed. She served as every officer of the chapters during her lifetime. P.E.O. was one of the organizations she was blessed to be a member of, and she treasured her P.E.O. sisters. Judy's mother, aunt, both grandmothers, both sisters, her niece Sandi (Pafford) Nguyen and daughter Susan Schafer, all were also initiated into P.E.O. Charlsie, Sandi and Susan all remain members today.
Judy was also a member of Eastern Star from 1981 to 2021. During this time, she became interested and went to clown school and graduated as “Hoodie the Clown”. She performed skits at Eastern Star meetings and at the Masonic retirement community for 4 years.
Hoodie, we will all miss you terribly. Your happy disposition, tolerance, and love for all was inspiring to so many people. You will be forever remembered.
