Alberta Maxine West passed away March 23, 2023, at Boulder Community Hospital at age 95. She is survived by Quentin, her husband of 76 years; children Ron West (Patsy) of Weiser, Idaho, and Karen West of Boulder; grandsons Kyle Dempsey (Jessica) of Denver and Brad West (Shelby) of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; three great granddaughters; and nieces Brenda, Amy, Trudy, and Jolene.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry Roy Reed and Sara Van Ausdal Reed of Boulder, and her brother Bob, also of Boulder.
Alberta was born, grew up, and graduated from high school in Fort Madison, Iowa. She and husband Quentin were high school sweethearts. Quentin went off to war in the Pacific in WWII as an Army Sergeant, from 1942-1946, serving with the 81st Infantry, attached to the 1st Marine Division. Alberta and Quentin were married as soon as Quentin returned from his military service. Alberta gave birth to son Ron in 1947 and daughter Karen in 1952.
Alberta and Quentin, with children Ron and Karen in tow, traveled from Iowa to Colorado in 1956 on vacation and liked it so much that they decided to move to Boulder. They built their current home in Boulder in 1957 and have lived there ever since.
Alberta worked as unit leader of the special files department at the Neodata Magazine Fulfillment Center in Boulder from 1966 to 1986, when she retired. She and Quentin have enjoyed their retirement years together; Quentin retired after working 31 years as a stock clerk at Rocky Flats in 1987. Daughter Karen retired from her work at Boulder Community Hospital in 2019 to care for her parents at the home.
Alberta loved her Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos. She thoroughly enjoyed traveling to Estes Park with Quentin and Karen to view the elk, and took frequent trips to Black Hawk before COVID set in. She loved her flowers, especially those growing in the yard. Her favorite foods were crab legs and peanut brittle!
Private viewing is scheduled at Crist Mortuary on Wednesday, March 29th.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date this spring.
