Robert ‘Cob’ Winston Jarvis, age 81, passed away on February 18, 2014, at home. Robert peacefully left this world to meet his Lord and Savior with his wife holding his hand. His first love was his Lord and a close second the University of Mississippi and Warrior Academy sports. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was affectionately known as ‘Cob’ or Coach Jarvis to all who knew and loved him. In high school ‘Cob’ led Booneville to state high school championships in 1949 and 1950, twice gaining all-state honors. In his junior year, he played on the undefeated football team.
During his three seasons of varsity participation in basketball and baseball at the University of Mississippi, he established 18 new school scoring records and became the first Ole Miss player to gain first team All-SEC recognition twice, in basketball, as well as the first player with ALL-SEC credentials in basketball and baseball. He served eight seasons as the Ole Miss head coach from 1969-1976. He was inducted into the Ole Miss Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and was named to Ole Miss All-Century Team in 2009. In 2010 he was the recipient of the prestigious SEC Basketball Living Legend Award.
After retiring, he began coaching the basketball teams at Warrior Academy. He won two AISA Class A State Championships with the girls and one with the boys. He was named AISA Coach of the year in 2004. He impacted the lives of many young men and women by the end of his coaching career in 2007.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM on Friday, February 21, 2014 at McMillan Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Booneville Cemetery.
There will be a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Eutaw, Alabama, Sunday March 2, 2014 at 2:00 PM.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; brother, Dee (Billie Jo) Jarvis; sisters-in-law, Faye (Charles) Harkins and Debra (Roger) Wheat; brother-in-law, Billy (Nona Faye) Carr; nephews, Eddie (Kris) Jarvis, Dean (Lynn) Jarvis and Richard (Regan) Harkins; nieces, Lisa Moore, Carol Jo (Bob) Jones, Sheena (Matthew) Whitehead, Shelley (Brad) Cooper, Caroline (Joe) Deigert and Suzanne Reese.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge Raymond and Edna Jarvis; Brother, Raymond Earl Jarvis; grandparents, William and Maud Jarvis and William and Hattie Hardy.
Pallbearers: Charles Harkins, Eddie Jarvis, Dean Jarvis, Matthew Whitehead, Brad Cooper, Roger Wheat and Michael Garris.
Honorary Pallbearers: Dr. Arti Pandey, Dr. Anand Pandey, Comfort Care Employees, Denise and James Fuller, Larry Sexton, William Turner, the Garris Family, University of Mississippi family, his Booneville Family and Warrior Academy family.
